Draft a Kicker in the First Round?

I know it might seem crazy, but am I the only one who wouldn't be too upset if we drafted Roberto Aguayo with our first round pick?

Just read an article about him and it sounds like he is one of, if not the best, kicking prospect to ever come into the league, extremely accurate with a very strong leg.

I realize it might sound stupid to take a kicker in the first round over maybe a DE, but odds are any DE we draft at the end of the first will be a role player for his first few years in the league before they could make any significant impact.

Whereas drafting Aguayo would potentially give us a 10+ year starter who very well could end up being the best kicker in the NFL in very short order from the sounds of things.

It might sound crazy, but in hindsight I think that 15 years of a great kicking is worthy of a 1st round pick. I don't think I would ever support us doing so, but if you could actually guarantee me Janikowski's career for a late 1st rounder, I would lean towards saying yes.

Why not?

It's not the same as when the Raiders spent the 17th pick on a kicker, it's the 30th pick, I'd imagine the percentage of 30th picks who become impactful players is rather low, and it's sounding like the chances of taking a project DE are very likely there.

Why not consider taking a guy who is as close to a can't miss prospect as there is in this draft with that pick and have a starter and potential (probable) pro bowler for the next decade plus?

The kid is so good that not only did he declare early for the draft after his Redshirt Junior season, there apparently were people telling him to leave after last year as he had nothing left to prove in college and was already more than good enough to be kicking in the NFL after just 2 years of kicking in college.

We drafted 31st in 2003. We got Chris Gamble, a cornerback who was able to start immediately, contribute (13 picks in his first two seasons) and become one of the best corners in the NFC over the course of his career. No reason to draft a kicker.

Because we have a good kicker and other needs to fill.

He'll be a third round pick rather than a seventh, then. The Janikowski debacle never worked. He's never been the best kicker in the league, and only rarely has he been top five. His accuracy is 22nd among active kickers.

No. Justin Tucker, Dan Bailey, Adam Vinatieri... All undrafted. Could name dozens of others. Gostkowski, 4th round.

Would I be cool with us drafting this guy? Yeah certainly. Gano is decent but not ideal. Not until the 5th or later though.

      I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?

      LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.

      After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
