Eisen: Nortman to Jax

It did seem interesting when Swayze Waters was our very first signing of the off-season.  (I think I read somewhere that teams can sign CFL players sooner?)   Made Nortman's leaving a real possibility in my mind, though I thought in the end we'd use the leverage of having signed Waters to get a cheap deal with Brad.

I read the Panther Players twitter feed list fairly often, and one thing I've noticed is that Swayze Waters seems quite active in several Christian ministries.  It makes me think that Gettleman picked him not only for his play, but for how he'd fit on special teams.  The "bomb squad" of Nortman, Gano & Jansen seems to be exceptionally close, and I've gotten the impression that one of the things that really unites them has been a shared devout faith.  Looks like Swayze Waters will fit right in with Graham & JJ in that sense.  It really makes me think that G'man & Rivera have an incredibly good pulse on the locker room & players.... they understand some of the intangibles that go into locker room chemistry and how a unit works together.  It will be interesting to see this new incarnation of the bomb squad part 2 and how these 3 specialists relate together.

Hope Waters proves to be an excellent punter for us!

I liked him a lot, he got his kids hair cut where mine go so I got to talk to him a bit, but on the field his performance was nothing spectacular - but it seemed to me he was into tackling a lot more than other kickers, and if he outkicked the coverage or kicked away from coverage and created a return opportunity for the opponent, he was charged up about tackling to address his error.

Waters has bounced around the league a little but I wonder if other teams were trying him at trying him at place kicker. In college he was a kickoff and long FG specialist. In the CFL he was kicking and punting. I guess we are looking at him at a true punter, than can also be the backup place kicker. DG loves those versatile players.
