Draft Prospect: Clemson Safety Jayron Kearse

I'm told former #Clemson safety Jayron Kearse has met with, or is set to visit and/or workout with the #Panthers, #Saints and #Titans.

Kearse's NFL.com Draft Profile (link) describes him as "freakishly" tall for a safety (6'4) with "limbs that go on for days" but questions his motivation.

If you're wondering, he's the nephew of former DE Jevon Kearse. Also cousins with Philip Buchanon.  No relation to Seahawk Wr Jermaine Kearse that I've seen.

Could be an interesting matchup against tall tight ends like Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham.

His mentality reminds me of a young Josh Norman in that he will try to gamble and gets burnt pretty bad.  Has the talent and size of George Iloka, but might take him a year or two of very good coaching to reach his potential.  I think he might be a good fit under Wilks if we can get him in rounds 2 or 3 and give him time to develop while providing depth at safety.

Takes some of the worst tackling and coverage angles I've ever seen and it often leads to huge plays. He's a project with fantastic physical tools and would be great in the middle rounds if he's there. Playing him right away would likely be a mistake for a competing team like us since there will be considerable growing pains in the first year or two. The other Clemson safety, TJ Green, is a much better player right now in my opinion but his ceiling isn't quite as high as Kearse's.

Would be worth a late pick on day 3, but I don't know if the questions about his motivation will fit with us. Possible our locker room could motivate him to give it his all for the other guys. DG and company will do what needs to be done.

This play is pretty representative of his play. Kearse crashes down into the line, leaving the cutback wide open with no one there at all which leads to a 75 yard TD. If he stays home it's like an 8 yard gain. He gives up many similar plays with bad tackling angles. There was one in particular from the championship game against Alabama and I'll see if I can find the highlight for it. I don't remember the exact play, but it stuck out to me as another example of Kearse being responsible for a big play.

Anyone comfortable with tre at SS if we dont make any moves there outside of the kid from washington?

Just going off the eye test he played well when given the opportunity.  Will be interesting if he can grab the spot in TC.

FWIW, which isn't much, I have Kearse in the 4th in my mock draft. Admittedly, I know almost nothing about college football or the draft prospects other than what I glean from a few draft sights.

15 has to make that tackle, I thought he was Kearse when I first saw this. Bouleware gets blown up too by 27. Id like to see Wilks develop this kid, nice measureables.

His measurables are very intriguing but yeah, I've seen some pretty critical write-ups on his game.  Definitely not a plug and play pick but could be coached into a good talent down the road.

Looks like a solid developmental mid round safety.

He and T.J. Green should have both stayed in school. Neither are ready for The NFL, as evidenced above in Kearse's case. I would love to take him as a late round pick and develop him for a couple of years, but some team is going to look at his measurables and take him late in day 2.
