Film Room: Josh Norman

by Cian Fahey

Sometimes things in the NFL move quickly. Tuesday night, Josh Norman was a free agent under the franchise tag in Carolina. Wednesday night, the Panthers rescinded that franchise tag, leaving Norman free to sign anywhere he wanted. Friday night, we learned that Norman wanted to sign with Washington, who gave him a five-year, $75 million contract that includes $50 million in guarantees and makes him the highest paid cornerback in football. Does Norman have what it takes to live up to a deal like that?

I have no idea what WAS scheme is, but IMO Norman is excellent off the ball with his eyes on the QB playing read and react football. He's kinda slight so his press game just seemed avg to me.

Heath Evans made a Asante Samuel / Bill Belichek reference where Belichek felt Samuel was th ebest DB in the league with his back to the left sideline, and was not gonna pay him what PHI offered. Then Samuel goes to PHI plays well, but not to the level he played in New England.

I could see a similar result in Washington, where he plays, well, but not quite the same level given the point I think he'll be asked to play more one on one like a Revis or Peterson. No reason to pay that kind of money if you don't anticipate using this guy to lock up the number one receiver, most downs.

Josh isn't fast enough to excel in man coverage against any good WR with wheels. He was a great piece in our defense, but I'm dubious on his prospects as a so called shut down corner, especially in a system that isn't as good as ours...He will be a good player for them, but I think this past year will be Josh's last time on the All Pro team.

FYI... Initial reports of $50m guaranteed appear to be incorrect.  Total is $36.5m

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Norman will receive a $15 million signing bonus along with $36.5 million fully guaranteed, earned over the first two years. While that’s not $50 million (duh), it’s a great payout for a deal signed on April 22.

Not a bad analysis. This did catch my eye, though:

"Gettleman understood that he could rely on the strength of his front seven to alleviate the pressure on his back four. He wouldn't blitz, so he could keep seven defenders in coverage as often as possible."

One: Gettleman has nothing to do with deciding to blitz since he isn't a coach. Two: We blitzed quite frequently.

He uses his hands well at the LOS, re routing the WR meaning he only has to keep up for a couple seconds. Straight line speed is the most overrated attribute by casual fans.

We really didn't blitz as much as you may remember...

23 24 CAR 161 681 23.6%

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/02/11/sig-stats-team-blitzing/

That's less than a quarter of our snaps, we are a heavy zone team that INDEED relies on the front four for pressure. That is why DB's are devalued slightly less here than on other rosters.

19 4 CAR 520 30 37 86 23.5

On top of that, we actually got WORSE this past season at blitzing. Not trying to call you out, just offering some stats with the feedback.

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
