Rookie Camp Practice 1 - Photos and Observations

Here are a few general photos and observations from this mornings Carolina Panthers rookie camp practice...

 

Keyarris Garrett caught all of the passes that went his way from what I could see.

Garrett does a good job of keeping his eye on the ball and looking it into his hands.

Garrett got plenty of individual attention from Ricky Proehl on the sidelines. Clearly there is a chance for him to make this team. I didn't see Proehl spend as much one on one time with any other receiver.

Second round pick Bradberry got the Steve Wilks arm grab, which no defensive back ever wants to get. When you are not where you need to be, Wilks will literally grab your arm and walk you to McDermott where you can get straightened out.

The Panthers are counting on a short learning curve from Bradberry. It is not unusual at all for rookies to miss assignments on their first day. But it was interesting to see the sense of urgency the Panthers had with this young man from the get go.

Devon "Rockhead" Johnson looks the part of a fullback. It will be difficult to tell how effective he can be until the pads are on. However, he did make a couple of grabs out of the backfield in drills, without dropping any. If he hopes to eventually supplant Mike Tolbert, he will need to do much more of that.

Unfortunately, the other tight end Jake McGee injured his left hamstring. It is unknown at this time the extent of the damage. But for any player looking to make this team, losing snaps will really hurt you. Lets hope it is just a cramp and not a pull or tear.

Linebacker Jeremy Cash has his work cut out for him to make this team. As a linebacker, he is the smallest guy on the field. I just don't see any way for him to make his way to the field in a linebacker role at his current weight. He would need to put on at least 10-15 pounds just to be competitive. I would be more interested in seeing him as a strong safety now that I have seen him up close. But, I of course defer to the Panthers. General Notes and Ramblings: 

Damiere Byrd looks like he has put on quite a bit of muscle this year and looked really sharp today. Keep an eye on this development. If he can come in around 185-190 and not lose any speed,  he can be a real threat. 

Zack Sanchez was in the nickel role all day and did not move to the outside. 

The starting defensive corners were of course Bradberry and Worley, the rookie draft picks.

Very nice.  Garrett said Proehl was the reason he came to Carolina.

It's interesting to see our 7th round pick and our UDFAs getting as much love & attention as our 1st round pick - including getting some features on Panthers.com.  Very cool.  Somehow it speaks to the Panthers' culture about letting your play speak for itself and earn you status.  It's a place where small school players can come in and thrive.  Nice.

How did he look running and cutting? The stuff I've seen from him in college looks like he's extremely agile and fast for his size. Honestly I liked what I saw from him in college more than what I saw from Derrick Henry. Rockhead should be your new Lee Ward, Jeremy. Except with more a chance to make the team. If he ain't yours then he is mine. And I love that he has one of my old numbers and my favorite jersey number (though I kind of wished when the NFL let LBs wear 40s again that TD would go back to 47... still have his rookie 47 jersey).

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.

      My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.

      He wasn't a JAG, he's been a starter every year of his career. Didn't turn into the superstar it seemed like he might his rookie year, but I think part of that has been being misused. Guy was/is a baller.
