"Oher Steals from Panthers"

Recommended Posts

I didn't see this posted last week. Our friends(?) over at RussellStreetReport had some interesting things to say about former Raven Michael Oher. Really, they are just pointing out the PFF grades that we discussed when he was signed. They also suggest that our tackles faced no good outside rushers last year.

So how bad was the damage?

Try three years, $21.6M with a whopping $9.7M guaranteed.

How can the Panthers feel justified in this decision? Oher was ProFootballFocus’ 30th-ranked offensive tackle in the NFL last year. Sure, he helped keep Cam upright on his way to the Super Bowl (10th in pass block per PFF), but his run blocking was off-the-charts horrendous (26.3 grade) and once he faced an actual formidable and fearsome front seven in SB50? He was manhandled with ease.

digging this quote though:

Sure, our Baltimore Ravens just cut left tackle Eugene Monroe. And sure, we lost out on retainingKelechi Osemele who opted for a Brinks truck and Oakland over Baltimore and a slightly smaller Brinks truck.

But thanks to the Panthers, Ravens fans should realize it could be worse. Much worse.

much worse?  are you talking about your own left tackle?  since we're citing PFF i don't think oher being worse is possible considering what they have to say about james hurst:

Quote

One could make the case that Hurst has actually played worse, because his struggles are all around. His run blocking grade of 27.9 is the third-worst among any tackle to take a snap, and his pass blocking grade of 26.1 is second-worst. His 29 pressures allowed has led to a pass blocking efficiency of 89.4, which is also lower than we’ve ever recorded among starting tackles.

considering one of the main points in the article is the classic "they haven't played anybodyyyyyy!" angle we know and love from last year at least oher proved he could pass protect against NFL competition at all, unlike hurst.

The author of the article is a biased Baltimore fan who is known for his off the wall views. It says so in his description of himself. So forgive if I take his opinion with a grain of salt. As for playing no one I guess Seattle twice and Houston doesn't count.  We brought in Oher to help the pass rush and he did. As for his run blocking it isn't that great. Who were we going to bring in that are going to be better at this point. Our team is based around the defense not offense. That is how we are built.

.  Excuse us if we have not been doing off-season, mindless research on other teams since October. We were a bit busy into February. Wanna throw stats around, PFF parrot?   17 wins in one season.  Super Bowl appearance. Like Baltimore, this team is based on a sound defense.  Like Baltimore, this team lost a key WR at the beginning of the season.

I agree with one comment--we did not face than many good outside rushers, and when we lost both times, Remmers was exposed--not Oher.

I find it hilarious when people say we finally faced a "real" defense in the superbowl and that's the reason we lost.

Bull fuggin sh*t. How about we faced a HISTORICALLY ELITE defense. We faced a real defense in the Seahawks and Cardinals (both top 5) and we slaughtered them. Denver was the ONLY team in the league with a defense like that, so saying we've been "exposed" as in teams know how to beat us now is outright bullsh*t.

And they call that contract damage? It's literally an decent contract for a decent LT. You want damage, don't pay Oher and let's let Foucalt protect Cam's blindside, then you'll see real damage.

I'll take "Useless articles written by twits" for a hundred, Alex.

Guy apparently isn't aware Oher got back his original position coach when he came here.

Criticism of another team's tackles is pretty funny from a team that fielded Eugene Monroe and James Hurst.

Yea that and it doesn't hurt when the refs keep moving your offense backwards. If on a fair playing field I think the game would have been very different. We faced elite defenses last year and we're successful. Denver had a awesome defense for sure sound from top to bottom. Any offense is going to struggle with that.

    • If he is BPA, then yes. I am a believer in Dan at this point and hope that he doubles on his strat from last draft.  T-Mac wasnt the biggest need, but at a first round position, over-drafting for need is bad.  We had XL coming back (we didnt know he'd catch rabid Racoon Disease in the offseason and forget how to be even an acceptable WR), Thielen coming back (yes...old AF thielen was a 1k reciever) and Coker coming off a surprising season...if you asked RIGHT AT THIS SAME POINT LAST OFFSEASON if we should draft Defense or T-Mac where we were last year, I guarantee 70-80% would have said "WHY THE fug ARE WE TAKING A RECIEVER!?!?!".  We're getting close, but you build a winning roster by Drafting studs in the first round and depth after, and Studs dont come from "Well we needed a Long Snapper", they come from "I dont care if we don't need a Receiver, That dude is THE DUDE"
    • I honestly don't care about NBA talent. Our last championship team was light on it. The team that went to the title game was light on it. I wanna win college games. I haven't watched a full NBA game in probably 15 years. I barely remember one and doners, whether their ours or elsewhere. It's one of the reasons why my hatred of duke has cooled. Their players don't hang around long enough for me to even know their names.
    • Should hopefully pick up a half-game on the Sixers and Heat tonight. Also possibly the Hawks and Magic. 🐝🐝🐝
