Carolina Panthers sign corner...

No clue how this will go but at least he's a good camp body. Bene isn't a slot corner, he's far better outside.

The market for slot corners is going to change drastically in the next few years. They're extremely undervalued for such a critical position. Hope we can find a solution on the cheap soon.

Good lord I'm tired of hearing Bene labeled as a nickleback. He's our best corner and will be matched up on the outside with the opposing team's best wide receiver

Picturing Bene one on one against a Julio Jones, Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Demaryius Thomas, Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen, Jeremy Maclin, Larry Fitzgerald, and Desean Jackson makes me wonder how many times he is going to get beat on the field this season. Bene could not even keep up with Doug Baldwin. Not much hope with those match ups. Thankfully, there are at least 3 games I will not be worried about Bene's disadvantage in match ups - Rams, 49ers, and Vikings. Vikings match up against Steffon Diggs does worry me a little. I would give a slight edge to Diggs. So, maybe just two games.

Front seven, front seven, front seven, front seven...like everyone has said, were rolling the dice this year in the secondary. Veteran presence can only help, even if not a starter.  Losing Harper and Tillman may have a bigger impact than we realize strictly based off of lack of practice input with our rookies.

Gettleman has shown that he can identify veteran DBs who will work well in our defense.  I was definitely uncomfortable with Bene being the only real veteran presence in the CB corps.  Hopefully this guy can play and can allow us to bring along Sanchez slowly.  Hopefully either Bradberry or Worley will be ready to go right out of the gate.  We're going to need at least one of the CBs to be an instant impact player.

Hate to say it, but if the Pats saw potential, I'm OK with it. They do really well finding talent. And if G-man signs off, I'm definitely on board.

What's happening with McClain?  Is he only viewed as an outside now?  Johnson and McClain seem very similar on paper and with their experience in the NFL.

The other thing is Boykin was here on a vet minimum for nickel help too.  Kinda of confirms there was some issue we don't know about there (he's still unsigned too).

People keep talking about Bene like he is an island unto himself on the outside. The reality is that he hasn't quite proven that yet. There have been some good signs, amid playing outside and in the slot, but he earned his lunch money as a nickel back in college. As far as I'm concerned, he is still a question mark, admittedly a smaller one, but a question mark nonetheless.

    • Incorrect, I have watched us consistently over quite a number of years. When I say Cam relied on athleticism, I simply mean his dual threat style and athleticism overshadowed the deficiencies in the passing game (his own or those created by the system).  Now I wouldn’t disagree that our OCs over that time were not amazing and arguably held him back, but correct me if I’m wrong, Cam had a habit of locking onto his receivers and overthrowing them. Gettleman even drafted two big receivers - Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess - to give Cam receivers with a big catch radius.  Again, correct me if I’m wrong, but Cam had some mechanical issues. For example, the reliance on arm strength over touch and his footwork often led to him throwing off the back foot. There were many debates on these boards about his mechanics, with far more knowledgeable posters than I braking down what he needed to improve on. End of the day, I was as big a Cam fan as the next person, but he did have his shortcomings as a passer. Had he played under someone like Sean McVay or a similar offensive guru, with a high quality QB coach, then I’m sure they would have ironed out the kinks and he would have been far more dangerous and successful than he was. And that’s a scary thought of what he could have been under the likes of a McVay!
    • It's true that we are not scoring at a much higher clip than the Saints. They're averaging ~18.4 with Shough and in that same span we're averaging ~19, so pretty close, despite Bryce having better TD numbers over that period. Both our teams are a far, far cry from the NFL average of 23.3...
