When was the last time this place was so quiet about our 1st round pick?

No splash plays? Week 2, he blew up a run by almost getting the RB 5 yards deep for a safety. It allowed Colin Jones to cause a fumble and we got a TD right after the turnover. Is that not a splash play? He's made some nice plays, but as you said, he's a rookie on a team that's gone to the playoffs the last 3 years.

Short had 1.5 sacks and didn't start a game his first year and that was when our DTs were pretty bad to start. Butler has a top 5 DT and a 1st round pick in front of him.

"Almost". That is exactly what I mean. He was disruptive but Colin Jones finished the play. Short was the same way... yes. Typical rookie stuff. Not sure if you are disagreeing with me but it doesn't sound like it.

I will disagree our DTs were pretty bad. Dwan was a very solid veteran for us. Colin Cole was good that year too.

There are some positions where guys are allowed to make plays based on their strengths.  I feel like positions where athleticism can overcome technique tend to deliver those kind of rookie highlights, like: CB, RB, WR, and DE/Pass Rusher.

For DT, you have to have Aaron Donald quickness off the snap (not too many of those lying around).  Then there are always deviations from the norm as well.

So Butler:  he's a big, athletic guy who came from a smaller school where he dominated inferior talent.  He's got the tools, but we need to be patient.  We did with Shaq, and he played well last year at the end, and he's looked quite good thus far. In G-man we trust!

Still though, I directly ask for what people think of him and there are barely any posts about it.  I left it open ended but want to know about this kid we drafted.

Reading through, it's more people defending Gettleman or going against the decision but that has nothing to do with simply seeing how the guy who we invested our first round pick is doing.

Anyone? Not saying anything about the decision to draft him or the fact he needs some years to develop.  He was our first rounder.

there was this post

how is he doing?  he looks like a rookie in an unsexy position fighting for snaps in a stacked position group.  he's been disruptive a few times but has also gotten stood up at the line and blown off the ball a few times as well.  the eternal "gettleman is a genius" vs. "gettleman is a moron" debate is always going to be implicit in any kind of discussion like this so you can't be surprised that it went there.

i want you to look me in my internet face and say that you'd be comfortable going into opening night with a rookie going up against von miller

a rookie that the seahawks are currently playing at guard, by the way

yeahhhh.  but did you see the superbowl?  :)

Honestly Im happy to see Remmjob get a shot at Miller again.

Not much to talk about until football begins.  I'm looking for 6 sacks from big vern though

Don't be too disappointed when he doesn't.  That's a huge order to fill for a backup rookie DT. There were only 7 DTs with six or more sacks last year. All big name starters.

They don't even gameplan in preseason, right?  It's not as if the rest of the Dline was doing much this preseason.   It's natural, he's not going to get as much talk because he was drafted for a position that isn't in need, like Shaq.   We'll see what happens when he's filling in and I expect him to start coming in on 3rd downs for Star as well.

I didn't know where to post this, and I really didn't want to create a thread for it.

I thought this was kind of an interesting read, but I don't know how accurate it is. I really don't know enough about the position to see much more than the flash plays.

I can't wait to see what Vernon Butler can do. He most definitely did make a few splash plays during the preseason and he will make some as the season goes along as well. It does generally take a couple of years before a DT really comes in to his own though All we need is for him to be a solid rotation guy this season and he can build from there.

I disagree with the posters in here saying he hasn't had a impact. I've seen the opposite in each game- spilt double teams, running to the ball, getting QB pressures, plenty of "assists" etc.

Fyi  observing preseason for a far and knowing it's "preseason" .........and remembering and thinking Derrick Henry would be a bust. The thought crossed my mind a few days ago. Jump in the time machine and somehow make Henry a panther, even if it's spending the first on him. Just having the largest offense skill positions in nfl history, gives me a mini-chub. Henry is looking like it doesn't matter he's running upright, but we'll see how he deals with injures.

DTs typically are not at their best until their 2nd or third seasons. The 3 main factors holding the DT back in the first season are lack of strength, lack of muscle memory, and lack of chemistry with the rest of the d-line. Next season will probably be the season everyone becomes excited about Butler.

Didn't expect this to get bumped but I'll reiterate: It's not about expectations for impact.  I'm asking about general interest.

I understand about what his realistic rookie ceiling is but I'm just asking about fan interest in the kid.

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
