You do know turnover margin is more dependent on the defense than it is the offense, right?

The defense can come up with takeaways, which is the most important part of a SB champion caliber team, and they can keep the opposing offense from scoring a TD following a turnover by their offense.

The rate of TDs allowed following a turnover is the most important aspect of the turnover element. The Panthers allowed 1 TD in 2015 following an offensive turnover.

Offenses will typically fall between 20 to 30 turnovers in a season. Under Rivera 23 is the highest the Panthers have been with turnovers. The goal is to have the offense under 30 turnovers on the season and the defense to have over 30 takeaways on the season.

The defense is on pace to set a franchise record low in takeaways. The drop from a league leading 39 takeaways in 2015 to what may be a franchise low 21 takeaways one year later is the biggest reason the Panthers are losing.

The defense must win the turnover battle, and they are not.

The defense's lack of takeaways and inability to stop teams from scoring TDs following a turnover is the most glaring problem.

That is true, but we could absorb the lack of turnovers on the defensive end (due to having the bad news bears playing corner) if our offense wasn't turning the ball over at the rate it is.  The fact is that we have the 3rd worst turnover margin, 2nd most total int's, and 3rd most lost fumbles.  Think about it, that pick in the endzone to funch this past week would have given us a win had it been a completed pass.  DA's pick in the endzone and we win against TB.  Hell, DA's pick 6 against ATL, we could have driven and tied that game.  We CAN have a dominant offense, and they CAN carry us, BUT, the only way they can carry us is if we cut out the turnovers.  I will say.  If we manage to go +8 in the turnover margin the rest of the year (and leave us at 0 for a +/-) then we might have a chance on having a decent run.  anything under that and we will end up with a top 10 pick (which is about where I'm predicting them right now.

we were 15-1 last year and lead the NFL in pts.  We are top 10 in scoring again right now and are working with the likes of Oher's backup.

Shula is the last thing people should be worried about

And his play calling has cost us games and a Super Bowl. To each their own though.

Show me rankings in situational football to go along with the offensive ranking and I'll care

red zone opportunities

turnovers.

Executing on 3rd down

oh yeah the won lost column

running 3 times at the end of the game when scores are needed and time short, not smart.  Time eating drives that result on a score that keeps our putrid defense off the field smart

We're also -8 in turnover margin.  Let's not just say it's one or the other, the Offense is doing it's fair share of failing too.  Right now, on offense if they take care of the ball, then we'll score more and the defense will be put into pressure situations less.

Is that more turnovers by the offense tho or just less turnovers from the defense?

We're close to being contenders again.

All the important pieces are there, and hopefully this season will provide lessons for future offseasons. We will be OK. Let the haters have their moment cause we'll be back.

Agree with this sentiment. Our record is bad, but we really haven't been out of a game yet until very late - a couple have come down to the last play.

Let me add...the stupidest call to start the game

rivera deferring which all but guaranteed a 7 to zero deficit with that defense

Note to Ron, this 2016 and you do not have 2015 defense

in the name of god, please stop deferring on the kickoff

I actually agree with this. He's stressed the need to be in front - so take the ball with your best unit and go score. Instead we give the offense the ball down a score which adds pressure. We need to be the ones setting the tone.

I think this falls more on the offense than defense because right now we have either the 2nd or 3rd most giveaways while being middle of the pack in takeaways.  Now I will say there is some credence to the fact that we're giving away the ball because we're pressing due to getting into deep holes dug by the defense (see Atlanta and New Orleans games), but it's still also putting a weak defense in a position where it has to hold.

    • Not many people talking about DT, but we have a need.  (DE)  Now this guy is a NT like Brown III
    • But is it about letting Bryce develop or about winning games? Bryce has not been good enough to be an uncontested starter. He just hasn't. How many times has last drive Bryce shown up for 4 entire quarters? Once in 3 seasons? You aren't going to win 9 or 10 one score games every season year in and year out. You may want Bryce in the last 2 minutes. I want that Bryce the full 60.  No one is saying you have to give up on him, but bringing in another QB that can do anything is not hindering Bryce. It helps the team and that's where the focus needs to be. If drafting Sadiq to plague the middle of the field would help out offense, but Bryce struggles to get pass into the middle of the field, is Sadiq a bad pick? Or could he be a good pick with a better option at QB? We can't be afraid to improve. QB, TE, OL, LB, DL, CB, S. It doesn't matter. The goal is SBs, not 5 to 8 years seeing waiting to see if Bryce can develop while the rest of the league keeps passing us by.  Sadiq is a nice option, but I think we have to address tackle if one we like is there because we are painfully thin after this year, a LB to general the field, and a true ball hawking safety that can set the tone in the secondary. Those 3 positions are bigger game changers than a TE that will likely struggle to make a round 1 impact in this offense.
    • Lil Stanky 100% in the dot tonight... And our 2nd line has been our best offensive line this season. Maybe our 2C really was on the roster this whole time...?
