Has a NFL team ever been first in sacks, last in pass defense?

As long as you can rush the passer, you can put literally anybody back there and be great. Its just the system.

I'm so fuging glad I don't have to read this bullshit again. All off-season this was parroted by yes men.

This stat really is amazingly pathetic.

We were such a collective dumpster fire defensively to start the year that it buried us.

Zero pass rush through the first 1/3 of the season coupled with an inexperienced secondary, and 1000 yards passing allowed against ATL and NO alone.

Most painful season I have ever watched.

I don't know,  like bamboo,  some things are just hard to kill.

I will say,  though,  that I suggested that notion be put to bed a couple of weeks ago,  and so far no one has brought it up.  Now that we have definitive proof that  it was bullshit---much like the fact that 89 was "done" when G-man sent him packing---perhaps Gettleminions will really shut up about it.

The only ones that haven't, are that moron Saca, and Prometheus poo face.  That's literally it now.

Just no. Remember Jimmy Clausen?

2010 was expected as a lame duck season, and Matt Moore was the starting QB that season. Clausen was never meant to be a starter. Moore was just that bad. JR needed to use 2010 to make his point in the CBA negotiations.

The 2010 defense was better than the 2016 defense. That is what you really need to focus on.

We have been getting killed by screens and swing passes this season, nothing our pass rush can do against that.

And for some reason there are posters who think CBs are not responsible for tackling or disrupting plays in the flats while forcing them back to the LBs and defending the sideline.

CBs are apparently suppose to hang back 10+ yards to watch for the deep pass and let everyone else clean up the sidelines and the flats while they watch.

This secondary is awful. I know some are going to want to believe the rookie CBs are elite and fail to make sense that the secondary is the worst part of the entire team. The safeties are part of it, but the safeties are better/more of an impact than anything at CB.

Anyone who wants to rely on these CBs as the firewall for the front seven will have to wait a few more seasons for any hope of a defense capable of contending in the playoffs.

A front 7 is essential to making plays and changing games, but the front 7 is easy to get around if you fail to have great communication and discipline in the secondary. A team could have a bunch of journeymen in the secondary, but as long as they communicate well, minimize mistakes and play physically disruptive football near the LoS, then the front 7 will be able to impact the game. Talent in the secondary has nothing to do with the foundation of success for the Panthers zone coverage defense. Talent in the secondary is just the plus that will make the defense dominant if they are smart enough to play as a unit on the NFL level.

Bradberry and Worley do not get it. They are some of the least physical and most entitled CBs I have seen in a Panthers uniform. They refused to give up their bodies on several occasions and made business decisions every game at the expense of the LBs and safeties. I was sick of seeing the watch and wait for Kuechly, TD, Shaq, or Coleman to come and clean up the play that the CBs  failed to force back to the inside. Norman, Tillman, Munnerlyn and White all made their biggest impact with their physical play in the first 8 yards, which led to a lot of the success with takeaways and game changing plays.

Norman was put in the dog house for play just like Bradberry and Worley back in 2012. Gettleman did everything he could to keep from Rivera having the vets to put Bradberry and Worley in the doghouse.

The reasons for the defensive implosion lies at the feet of the following players (and the rookies should have never been put in this position following a SB team):

  • Ryan Delaire
  • Kony Ealy
  • Paul Soliai
  • Vernon Butler
  • James Bradberry
  • Daryl Worley
  • Zack Sanchez
  • Bene Benwikere
  • Tre Boston
  • Kurt Coleman (at SS)
  • Leonard Johnson
  • Michael Griffin

Josh Norman, Charles Tillman, Roman Harper, Jared Allen, Kurt Coleman (at FS) and Dwan Edwards were greatly missed in 2016. Their voids loomed large over the team on and off the field. Those players accounted for 40% of the defense in 2015, and the players responsible for filling their shoes came up short by a large margin.

We have to run zone because corners can't cover straight up

That's not true at all. There has been many(tho rare) instances where we switch to man/press coverage and Bradberry in particular held up fine.

We played zone even when Josh was playing great last year. It's our main coverage scheme, no matter who is playing CB.

Even when Josh was shadowing WRs, he still played cover 3 which is a zone concept.

The good offenses has figured out where the voids in the zone are and attacked it.

Because he's a rookie? Even Jalen Ramsey who is an absolute stud hasn't shadowed a lot. Josh didn't always shadow last season either.

Even Patrick Peterson doesn't really shadow WRs anymore. I can go on and on...

Josh would play cover 3 with no safety help. Coleman and Harper had to cover way less field last season.
