Highest Graded Rookie CBs Of The 2016 Season: Guess Who's Number 1?

The Panthers arguably had one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL for the majority of the season. Our corners were inexperienced rookies getting used to the system, and injuries really derailed our potential. The defense was unable to produce early in the season, but there's no doubt our unit finished pretty well off.

Our corners - as much of a rough start they had - began to flash greatness near the end of the season, justifying Gettleman's pick for them.

Turns out Panther fans aren't the only one who saw potential in our corners, specifically Bradberry.

Guess where he's ranked as far as best rookie corners?

He beats out the likes of Ramsey and Young to overtake the podium at first place.

James Bradberry, small school kid out of Samford, comes into the spotlight and becomes the biggest steal of the draft. Essentially picked like a high third rounder, he has proven to be one of the best rookies in the NFL this year.

Looks like the Panthers truly have someone worthy to fill in Norman's jersey. Won't be long until he becomes a mainstream name.

Still one CB behind...him and Norman would be a great tandem... lost opportunity at the end of the day.

Something interesting:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-round-by-round-ranking-of-2016s-best-nfl-cb-prospects/

Pre-draft PFF looked at all the corner prospects by round and even UDFA. None of the three we drafted were on it...

Could we have gotten Bradberry later? It's very likely. But I'm glad as hell we got him there because he is definitely worth way more than that pick already. Just like Mayo. Could we have gotten him as a UDFA? Probably. But looking at his ST play this past year and his filling in for Luke at the end, I'm glad as hell we got him where we did because he's well worth it. DG and this staff right now is just f*cking amazing at finding diamonds in the rough in the draft. Does he have flaws? Yeah. But even people like @nctarheel0619 have to admit that we are one of the best drafting teams since he's arrived and very possibly THE best. Butler and Shaq are going to prove it as well when their roles are increased significantly in the near future.

I'd like to argue he was considered a 3rd round my many other GMs. Considering we had the 2nd to last pick on the second, it's fair to say someone in the middle of the 3rd woulda snagged him. In fact, I remember many mocks saying he'd be around the 3rd round; some even saying the Bucs would snag him.

I don't think we wasted any value at all getting him. He's 100% worth it, and proved it this season.

True story:

On the 2nd day of the draft last year I attended the hornets game 6 loss to the heat. After the game I waited for the valet at the ritz to bring my car around. The wait was long as hell (free service as long as you buy 1 drink at the bar).

Also waiting was Stephanie Rivera, we chatted about Norman and how much we would miss him. He even came around and spoke to Stephanie and myself and any other fan who wanted to talk. Super cool guy. (Stewart was the opposite and shunned everyone). Also Iverson was very fan friendly that night.

Anyway back on track, I asked her how she was feeling about our draft picks so far. I don't remember any exact words or anything but she conveyed they felt good about how day 2 worked of the draft worked out. I asked something along the lines of who Ron was most excited about. Of course she immediately mentioned Bradberry and said they thought we got an incredible steal with him and Ron was pumped about it.(again. Not exact verbiage).

Bradbury is a classic example of why draft estimates of value make little sense. Many folks though we reached for a corner in the second when we picked him as there were other guys ranked higher. But for our needs and what we wanted, he clearly performed very well. People on this board who argue what round we should draft guys would have likely argued that Bradbury in the second was too early and not good value. And it appears they would have been wrong. I look forward to see who we pick this year so we can have that same discussion  if we don't pick Adams or Fournette but go another direction at 8.

I hate the "draft value" on guys based on them never playing a down of NFL football...  It's almost like those media pundits aren't good enough to work on a NFL team...crazy?

I can't wait to see our head scratcher this year.  =)  Everyone will say "Why did we draft X when we could have gotten my dude, Y!?"

Good times!

A lot of scouts & teams had Bradberry ranked in the 2nd round, thats why Gettelman didnt take a chance on him dropping.

    • Right. But you do understand that there is no such thing as not signing free agents, right? That's what I mean. So make some good free agency moves and do well in the draft. That's step one. If you can't accomplish that, then this will just keep getting worse.
    • Sweet jebus this is idiotic Yes, overall team success in this league, you need a good QB, but beyond just that painfully obvious fact, let's get into the rest of the stupid in there......... First things first, you say.. "if we need a good QB for him to have success, then why are you drafting that player with the #1 pick" Show me one time I've ever said we would need a good QB for T-Mac himself to have success... you can't, because I never have.  I think you're referring to the "he's bad enough that we then have a Top 5 pick to target a QB" part of my post, which is very clearly talking about said QB, not T-Mac.  The other way to interpret that is just overall team success, which again, wouldn't be anything about T-Mac or his ability to impact the offense or overall team wins and losses. I'm quite sure I could do this with a number of teams over the years, but I don't want to spend the time to do multiple, so I'll keep it to just the 2023 Vikings right now since you wanted to use Jefferson as your example....... The Vikings went 3-6 after Cousins went down last year.  And two of those wins came before Jefferson even came back from his own injury, they were 1-4 in the final 5 weeks after Jefferson came back. In those 5 games, Jefferson had 31 catches, 503 yards, and 2 TDs Having the WR you specifically called out didn't help them go better than 1-4 with a bad QB, even though he still put up a great stat line for that time period either.  It also didn't make that QB good enough to where they then went out and brought in TWO new QB's this year to replace Doubs and Mullens who started down the stretch for them last year. And that's with 4th year Jefferson, not a rookie that T-Mac would be If you expect a WR getting drafted #1 overall to be the player to turn a franchise as bad as we are around in 1 season, make whatever QB we're able to put in there be successful, and lead us to a solid season, then you are literally insane. We are AWFUL, we have a few young guys who could turn into great players, but we are so far from being a good team, that there isn't any player we could draft next year that is going to change that in 2025.
