Discussion: Carolina Panthers Select Hogmollie FB Alex Armah

With the 6th Round pick, the Carolina Panthers select Alex Armah. With this pick, the Panthers look to further bolster their D-line depth and youth.

UPDATE: Scratch that, he'll be a FB for the Panthers. Instead, the Panthers will look to have a hogmollie as a FB to replace Tolbert.

Likey Like.

A 240 lb Fullback. Lordie.

(From SI.com)

As the season ended and the time came to prepare for a potential pro career, Armah faced a question: Where should he try to play? He figures he’s too small to be a 4–3 defensive end, so his main college position is probably out. But the answer is easy to figure out after asking Armah one question.

Which of the following feels the best?

A) Scoring a touchdown.

B) Sacking the quarterback.

C) Making a huge tackle on defense.

D) Obliterating a linebacker with a lead block. (His answer)

“If that collision happens in the hole with that ’backer, I love that,” Armah said. “I live for that.”

Armah didn’t get invited to the combine, but his pro day numbers (4.68-second 40, 26 reps, 34.5-inch vertical jump) should help. His bench press total would have made him the second-strongest back at the combine behind Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine, and his 40 time stacks up favorably against pure fullbacks such as Florida State’s Freddie Stevenson.

STRENGTHS

Durable and tough. Two-way player who was named all-conference first team defensive end and second team tight end. Thick through his chest and lower body carries good mass. Pumped out 26 bench reps. Has experience as in-line blocker against bigger foes. Has desired demeanor to be a blocker. Has athleticism in space and is a viable consideration as blocker/pass-catcher in two-back scheme.

WEAKNESSES

Will need much more experience as a lead blocker. Spent most of his time as a tight end and will have to learn to find targets in space and land a blow on them. Is a little too short to be considered for h-back or move tight end duties. Needs to bring his feet with him through contact for better block sustaining.

BOTTOM LINE

Armah has some talent to build on, but finding the right positional fit for him is the first challenge a team will face. Teams seem to be split on where to play him with some seeing outside linebacker, some seeing inside linebacker and some seeing him as a fullback. I see him as a lead blocker pairing with a zone-heavy team looking for some size and ability to catch the ball out of play-action.

Not a chance of being a DE here. LB depth or even FB/TE option. Very interesting and intriguing pickup. I love two way players and he's one of them. More likely than not as a 6th rounder he'll be on our PS the whole year but I think it's possible he could carve out an early role as a FB/TE depth and on ST. Love the pick. Wanted Sam Rogers or Noah Brown here but still hoping we can get one or both in the 7th/UDFA.

    • Dude you're all over the place. Bryce definitely played better than average down the stretch last year. That's what I said. I dont think it's controversial, and I think it's true based both on stats and by actually watching him play. He was the 6th rated passer by PFF during the last 8 weeks. In no world is that below average You trying to twist this into something else is a you thing.  Have a great night
    • Exactly He's played two seasons and started 28 games. He's well beyond the point of being able to point to 2 or 3 games and being able to say, "THAT is the QB he is and will be in the future" Of course he can get there, but anyone trying to use just those couple of games to rank his place amongst the games QB's today and their full career's worth of playing at that level, is just asinine. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Daniels, Stafford, Goff, Geno, Purdy, Baker, Love, Dak, Tua, Kyler, Lawrence That's 17 QB's right there that have played better over their careers than Bryce has played at his best.  And I'm not saying they're all studs or guys I'd want to be our QB moving forward, Tua for example I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, but his body of work is a million times better than Bryce's has been. It's also not including any of the other QB's drafted in 2023/2024 other than Daniels. So again, say you believe in Bryce, say you think he's going to prove he can and should be our QB of the future, that's all fair and totally fine. But nobody can say he's been an above average QB in his career thus far, it's just an asinine notion.
