Gettleman nutthugger checking in. I'm more shocked than anything, but I don't necessarily think we are screwed, this year at least. 

There wasn't much more for Gettleman to do this season. The remaining roster is hashed out by the coaches and then Dave cuts the other guys. Everything that was to be done, was done for the 2017 season. Whatever happens, happens, and the direct results will be what Gettleman put together. The timing of the move is super weird but we either do well in spite of the move, or we crumble and the move looks like Richardson can predict the future. What happens after this season though is what has me more worried. 

Long term this is a head scratcher. We have No GM, No assistant GM, No team President. There is a severe void in leadership for this franchise moving forward. Like Gettleman or not, he was a warm body to man the position and we had an idea of what we would be doing under him. There was vision. It was cold at times, and it was all business, but we had more success in his short tenure then we did with any other GM at the helm. Many people will argue that it was with Hurney's core, and that is true, but if you give me 5 core ingredients and Gordon Ramsey 5 core ingredients, I can pretty much guarantee you that my dish won't be nearly as good as his. Hurney found some tasty poo, he just didn't know how to make it work with all the other ingredients. That's where Gettleman came in, and seemed to break a few eggs in the process. 

Truth be told I am a bit worried. I don't think Gettleman's drafting was as great as many on here seem to, the sheen has definitely come off many of his picks, but he was still able to fill roster spots with talent from UDFA guys and vets that can contribute at team friendly prices. He also didn't overpay for players which is the thing that got us into trouble before he arrived. From the outside looking in, the good outweighed the bad with Gettleman, but we weren't there for the day to day stuff and we don't really know what all happened behind the scenes. Dude could have been a complete dickhead to work with and that wears on anyone. 

So this year, I'm pretty meh about what happens. I think the worst case scenario for the long term success of our franchise would be if we win it all. That would show how short sighted of a move this would be. I still hope we win it all, I always do, but I don't think it will work out too well in the near future if we do. 

So I'm hopeful we get our poo together and find a GM who's even better than Gettleman, but I've got some serious concerns moving forward...

Anyway, what do you guys think?

The Falcons fired the most successful head coach they had had in franchise history and went to the SB 2 years later.  How Cam plays this year is honestly way more important than any other factor out there.  As it is with the other 31 QB's in the league for the most part.

If Cam plays like 2015, we will make the playoffs.  If not, we will be a 7-9ish team.

Well he got us out of "cap hell" and hopefully gave us a decent foundation to work with in the future. I loved his press conferences and his "don't give a poo" attitude. I'm not the one to panic, but reading the reaction threads today makes me think that the apocalypse is upon us. Everyone, please calm your tits and enjoy this animated gif from Airplane!

Like I said, I'm not worried about this year.

Next year it might be rough though.

Man, I love this team... So much so that I tattooed the logo on my leg after the 2010 Clausen debacle... But I cannot drum up anythign more than an 'oh well, we'll see what happens now' attitude. I ap[appreciate what Gettleman did while he was here, but somebody has a good reason why he's unemployed. Might not be a good reason to us, but its a good enough reason the them... 

 

I will not denounce this team, like I did in 2001 when we lost our 5th straight to the 'Skins, and refuse to buy or wear any Panther gear...

 

I will still pay for my SundayTicket, will still be in front of my TV every Sunday and damn sure will still bring my daughter to her 1st game on a MondayNight this November...

 

It is so much easier when you get that its entertainment and it doesnt matter what you do, whether you wash your jersey or not, which way you point your helmet, what jersey you bought... Its out of your hands, enjoy what you can, revel in the good times....

      No. Physical tools alone aren't enough. There are plenty of examples of draft busts to support that. Aost all of them had the physical tools and that wasn't enough. But Bryce is a perfect example of the opposite. Absolutely elite intangibles aren't enough either. If you simply don't have the physical abilities all the football intelligence and work ethic in the world won't be enough to overcome it. Just look to the sidelines every Sunday. We call those people "coaches".

      As much as I despise Billy B, his philosophy on QBs is how I would approach things if I were a GM. You always keep looking for your next starter.  He has Bledsoe, who got injured and his backup ended up being the GOAT. Even while he had that going, he kept getting his next guy and developing them. When Brady got hurt, Cassel stepped in and went 11-5 and they missed the wild card by dumb luck. Who knows how far they would have gone if they had gotten in. Jimmy Gs career started in NE. There were others, but he always kept looking.  You can't be afraid to keep looking for your next starter, but it looks like we're afraid to look for more than a marginal one. If you're going to offer a $25m contract with incentives, that screams marginal QB. It also screams you're just a transition until we find our guy. After a 10 or 11 win season, he's not accepting that offer. And then you're in a Daniel Jones situation. Do you pay for a year of success and pray it wasn't a one year wonder?  To this point, Bryce has really produced nothing, yet for whatever reason, our FO has not even sniffed at the idea that we need a real QB room with real QBs. Dalton was never starter potential, Plummer was a joke. KP certainly isn't, neither is Grier.  Our approach to the QB room needs to be one of strength not fear. Bring in guys who can compete or who you think can compete. This is THE elite position, in an elite sport, paid premium salary, where production matters. Either you produce or you can lose your job. It's not mean, it's just the reality of the position.  And I'm really just tired of our candy ass approach to it.

      If you plug Bryce onto the Pro Bowl roster you might have a chance to compete for a SB. If he's surrounded by top tier talent with a top tier defense on the other side, a field flipping punter, and a kicker good from 60+ you might have a chance. But that means you basically have to recreate Saban's Bama in the NFL and that's impossible... and Bryce couldn't win a championship in that environment either. What the Panthers didn't realize when they got so obsessed with his "PG mentality" was that what they were looking st was a "barely checks the box PG". The basketball equivalent of Bryce would be an undersized PG with marginal athleticism who can make the basic plays but adds nothing to the team in terms of elevating the overall team. Not a great shooter, not a great defender, not a great driver. Just a guy who can basically get you into the offense and be a matador on defense. Basically a placeholder while you look to upgrade the PG position.
