ANALYSIS: Schoen was mentioned by Mike Florio - along with Ryan Cowden and Jeff Morrow - as one of three candidates of whom a league source said "They love these guys."  Given that Schoen only took the Bills Assistant GM job this year, it seems an unlikely choice.  Seriously, who gets promoted twice in the same offseason?  I'm including him here though because he has been mentioned and because Florio was actually the first person to float the name of Dave Gettleman during our last GM search.  So there's that, but overall I think this is just pure speculation with no real backing except that Schoen worked with us in the past.

hard to really even parse media reports about the Panthers. that's a lot of potential knowledgeable sources that walked out the door. who even has the kind of authority right now to speak for Panthers football ops perspective?

Schoen's Dolphins media guide bio:

Joe Schoen begins his ninth season as a part of the Dolphins’ scouting staff and third in his role as director of player personnel, after being named to the position on May 19, 2014. Schoen spent the 2013 season as the assistant director of college scouting, after serving the first five years with Miami as one of the team’s national scouts.

In his role as director of player personnel, Schoen serves as a primary advisor to General Manager Chris Grier on all personnel matters. His responsibilities include assisting in building and managing the Dolphins roster, as well as overseeing both the college and pro scouting departments. Schoen also assists in spearheading the team’s preparation, assessment and acquisition of potential professional and collegiate free agents. He oversees all aspects of the annual NFL draft, including preparation, evaluation and draft board construction while also serving as a key liaison between the coaching staff and personnel staff.

Schoen came to Miami in 2008 after spending his first seven years in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers. He joined the Panthers in May 2001 as a scouting assistant and was promoted as the club’s National Football Scouting scout, covering the Southeast one year later. In 2003, Schoen was again promoted by the Panthers to scout the Southwest in the team’s system. Prior to joining the Panthers on a full-time basis, he interned in the team’s ticket office in January of 2000, while also having worked in the club’s training camp later that same year in football operations.

Schoen was a three-year letterman at DePauw University (1997-2000), where he played quarterback as a freshman and wide receiver his final three years. As a senior, he was named the Thomas Mount Offensive Player of the Year while also being selected as a first-team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference choice as he set the school single-season record for receptions with 80 (now third). He amassed 153 receptions for 1,861 yards (12.2 avg.) and 14touchdowns in his career and ranks No. 8 in school history in receptions and receiving yards. Schoen, who earned his degree in communications from the Greencastle, Indiana school, also was named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll his senior year.

A graduate of Elkhart (Ind.) Memorial High School, Schoen and his wife, Marie, have a daughter, Sydney, and a son, Carson.
