Hurney "isn't sure" he's only interim

Hurney said on PFT Live that he isn’t sure if he’ll become the Panthers’ G.M. on a permanent basis in 2018 and beyond, or if he’ll move aside for some fresh blood when this season ends.

“One day at a time, that’s how this business is,” Hurney said. “Right now that’s the job and anybody who has done this job knows you have to have a very short memory, and while you have to have a long-term view, I think you still have to take it day-to-day.”

In other words, if the Panthers have a good season and Hurney is credited for making good personnel moves in his brief tenure as the “interim” G.M., it’s possible the can have the “interim” title removed. It’s also possible that Hurney will step down at the end of the season, in which case he said he’d be ready to help Panthers owner Jerry Richardson identify the right candidate to take on the job for the long term.

This isn't news, unfortunately.

His acknowledgement of it is.

It tells me that at the very least he's open to the possibility if Richardson wants it, and we know Richardson nearly always makes the wrong decision on these things.

If you wanna read more into it, then it's possible to believe the decision is already made and Marty is just being discreet.

The thing to watch will be if there's an actual GM search or they just go through the motions.

All depends how our season goes

I'm not even sure it matters.

I honestly think that what it really depends on is how Jerry Richardson likes the feelings and the atmosphere inside the building.

We could have an absolute s--t season and I'm confident he'd find a way to blame it on other factors and say that he still trusts Marty to "right the ship".

Think of it this way...

If results are really the most important thing, then why was the GM who led this team to its most successful stretch fired and replaced by the guy who presided over one of its worst?

The fact that this happened in the first place makes it clear that winning is not the most important factor.

    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
