Last night's preseason game against the Jags was an interesting one to judge from an overall standpoint. It's probably just me, but it seemed like the two extremes of good and bad were on blast. Maybe it was seeing Cam Newton, then Derek Anderson, or Bradberry and Worley, or Moton and Kalil, I don't know. 

Anyway, here's some of their notes from lastnight's game.

The top five were:

LB Luke Kuechly, 87.8 overall grade

DI Kawann Short, 86.3 overall grade

CB Zack Sanchez, 85.9 overall grade

CB Jeff Richards, 83.0 overall grade

LB David Mayo, 79.4 overall grade

It's so nice having a player that plays  at a high level with such consistency.  If Duke is Duke, then Luke is Luke. Luke is better at being Luke than Duke is at being Duke. That being said, David Mayo is developing into a model of consistency himself, because he has really been good since answering the call for A.J. Klein last year. At this point, we might have to really start hoping that the next man behind him steps up (Jared Norris), because in a couple of years he may want to start somewhere.

PFF also mentions the undeniable beast that is Kelvin Benjamin, even if he's not big on YAC. If we can get the type of play out of Benjamin that we have so far this coming season, then there's probably no question that he should be re-signed at market rate. Mind you, I am ultimately withholding judgment, but I'm excited because Benjamin looks like he's on a mission. His game face is on! Truth is, he wasn't bad last year, but he looked a little off. This year, he appears to be primed to make a statement with his game!

Matt Kalil is talking a good game, but he needs to step it up. A 39.5 overall grade just ain't going to cut it. 

 

"One of Carolina’s biggest issues last season was the struggling play of their offensive line. They went out and signed Kalil in free agency, hoping he could lock down the left tackle spot for them. This game was his a chance to prove that he was worth the money as he lined up against high-level Jaguars ED Calais Campbell. However, it was Campbell who got the better of Kalil in this one. Kalil allowed a hit and two quarterback hurries to Campbell, as well as a run stop. He finished with a team second-lowest run blocking grade of 36.5, and a team-low pass blocking grade of 41.7."

 

It's still only a preseason game, and it WAS against the lowly Jags, so I don't know if that was either a good thing or a bad thing. I guess it just means we'll have to wait for the season to begin before we really get a handle on what our expectations should be, like seemingly every year.

We're definitely a work in progress.

Don't understand what PFF is watching. Matt Kalil was big and as imposing as any tackle I've seen. Lots of good comments from a lot of people on Kalil's performance. I don't buy that.

Kelvin Benjamin is looking like the real deal. I think he will keep it up in the regular season. Man I'm pleasantly surprised.

It's pretty crazy to see how this team produces high quality starting linebackers out of anyone. We truly have the best and deepest LB corps in the NFL.

Week 1 can't get here any faster.

Those were Robinson's only two pressures on the night. That's pretty good. 

I don't know for sure (about his vs. Kalil's grade), but it's probably because Robinson played markedly more snaps.

If you give up more pressures on a smaller sample size, but very little on a larger sample size, then we all know which one is going to be graded higher.

yep, we don't need the cowboys o-line for Cam to be an NFL MVP. We just need a serviceable one. Remarkable.

I'm not down on Kalil at all.

Our offensive line looks pretty impressive so far...possibly a *gasp* strength? They'll gel and gain cohesion during repetitions...they are off to a good start...and a healthy Ryan Kalil won't hurt (I know he played one series last night)

I'm ultimately withholding judgement on Kalil, but I will say that I just am not down with saying he only has to play to a certain level. I want him to play to the highest levels (commensurate with his salary) because I want the other guys, particularly our QB, to play to their highest levels. "Good enough" just ain't doing it for me at a position which is arguably the second most important position on the team.  

Kalil is still a very big question mark, so I'm going to try as be as objective as possible with him, but that goes both ways. I'm not going to go out of my way to make him out to be terrible, but also not going to put homer glasses on either. I just want him to be an exclamation point, and he wasn't that last night.

      That does sound familiar. Those fans are deep. In snow lol. you don’t want to be up there in January.   I would think they have probably seen it all. Except what…  the championship? Gotta feel for them.

      I thought he was from watching him play and also doing his first HC job. I thought he was the real deal  Apparently what happened is Kraft committed to Mayo and I don’t remember the timeline exactly - but Vrabel was unemployed at the same time Belichick was unemployed. They both were fired (or out) after the 2023 season.  Kraft hired Mayo. Who was kind of an obvious disaster. He probably already had the deal in place but I will give Kraft credit for not sleeping. With Vrabel out there for 2025 he made the move he needed to make and if it hurt Mayo’s feelings then oh well.  I guess you can tell I am not fond of Kraft but that was a really savvy move. At his age, pretty good. Still has it.

      It’s going to feel like a home game for the bills. There are so many of their fans that live down here now, and many of them have never seen Allen play in person since their last visit was 8 years ago. It didn’t matter for the cowboys game, but it might here. I think we likely lose a close one. Probably a questionable flag or two that doesn’t go our way. X factor for Buffalo will be Kincaid and Knox. If we do win it’s because we get ahead and play keep away from Allen. FYI- I have many friends who are Bills fans that are fed up with Beane who we all revere and think is the one that got away. They feel like he was great to land Josh but has done a terrible job of building around him (especially at WR) and rely on him to become super man to win- sounds kind of familiar, like the last time we had a franchise QB.
