Yeah, I would like to urge everybody to go to Panthers.com and watch his PC from today. I don't think he's ever been a part of it before now.

Here is mine

But if we play like this, this year's defense will blow all out of the water

Interesting take. Hard for me to see anyone but 96 or 13 as #1 but certainly an argument can be made for 02.

I agree with notion but I would like to see more in the Turnover area Once the running games gets going , this defense will go up another level with ability to stay fresh for 4 qtrs.

We had the ball for almost 39 minutes. If a defense doesn't have the ability to stay fresh for 4 qtrs while sitting for over half the game then they never will be able to stay fresh.

I say our punt return game needs to improve a lot. CMC isn't running towards his blockers once he catches the ball. He needs to not hesitate and follow the blockers. A short field after a punt is almost as good as a turnover.

I wanna be carefully optimistic here because we have played horrible offenses with no QB play. We will know for sure in two weeks.

exactly. whi have we played?

Brees throws for 300 yards, easy peezy. this will not be a cake walk. I have no idea what that means, probably something about getting your head cut off....

Belicheck is already gaming for the Panthers.

 I am not easy...but I am high.

The defense has certainly shouldered quite the load in the first 2 weeks and has responded very well.

However, if we're honest it HAS only been the 49ers and Bills. That's not to take away from what the defense has done - they can only play the offenses on our schedule, afterall - but it's not as if we've had to play a dynamic offense to this point.

People have pointed out the quality of QB's we've played and while that is true, of equal concern could be that neither team we've played thus far has featured a dynamic WR threat that requires game planning against.

Looking ahead, we still have matchups with Julio Jones and Mike Evans twice each, as well as Desean Jackson twice, Jarvis Landry, Stefon Diggs, and Jordy Nelson/Randall Cobb before the year's out.

That said, I like our CB's a lot this year. Bradberry has looked every bit the part of a #1 corner, Worley has been very good as well despite being targeted more often as offenses have avoided Bradberry to an extent. Also, Captain Munnerlyn's return has had the intended effect as nickel is no longer the weakness it has been since he left for Minnesota.

At any rate, the defense does appear to be legitimately Super Bowl-caliber. There really isn't a clear weakness at any level (even Old School Mike Adams has played well at safety) and we've clearly got the depth required to survive a typical level of injuries in the front 7. The concern there is obviously depth in the secondary, especially at safety.

But if the offense can't get it's act together - and figure out how to make due without Olsen for 8 weeks - to the point where it's at least functional then I fear the performance of the 'D' will end up being wasted in the long run.

The Panthers CBs would need to create turnovers and make game changing plays before you can refer to this as the best ever defense.

Can we get a FF or an Int from the CBs when the game is on the line and the front 7 is forcing the opposing offense to throw the ball directly at the CBs?

Josh Norman has 2FF this season, and Robert McClain has a pick 6 with fewer opportunities and weaker front 7s than Bradberry and Worley. They need to start impacting games in a positive way instead of being the go to stooges for every offense we encounter.

I do agree with the fact that it's time for our young CBs to start making plays on the ball. It's the only way we can become the defense that we want to become. I think the jury is still out on Worley. We will see soon about this Secondary.

    • I’m keeping an eye on what the Hawks do with Boye Mafe. There’s a few young talented players that needs to be retained and one of their defensive starters might not fit within the budget. My guess is probably Riq Woolen is voted off the island but Mafe could be potentially too. His stats aren’t eye popping, but in McDonald’s defense, his role is to leverage for the DL to clean up. Mafe’s QB pressure rate is top notch and in a different scheme, he could clean up.    Just something to watch this weekend when SEA is in town.
    • Ok fair to judge only his starts.  But you do acknowledge that going from "he's waaaay above league average in a number of categories" to "here's a single stat where he's above league average (not "waaaay") and another where he is exactly at the league average" is a pretty significant backpedal, no?  I'm guessing he's probably in the ~10th range for completion percentage too if we're only looking at starts (I'm too lazy to isolate his starts and do the calculations), so I'll grant you that one too.  But I don't think completion percentage is all that meaningful as a standalone stat if it isn't bolstered by good TD%, Y/A, etc. On that note, for how much people like posting Passing Charts in here (*cough* CRA) - if you peep Shough's passing charts, he hasn't completed a single 20+ yard pass in the past 3 games combined.  His last one was in Week 13 against the Dolphins, which was a single pass of 24 yards.  I just want to be consistent in how we apply our standards - I think it's always been warranted to criticize Bryce for it (even dating back to his rookie season), but do we suddenly not care about that with Shough? And yeah I did acknowledge that Saints' fans have reason to be excited about him and complimented his poise, which is giving my props.  Still not sure I agree that he looks better than a "ton" of QBs nor do I think you or anyone have really demonstrated that.  I think you are generally one of the more reasonable level-headed posters which is why I'm confused at what I consider to be rather hyperbolic language about Shough.
    • I don't disagree with you, but want to point out that Tremble's strong suit has always been blocking. Case and point: on Horn's 25 yard run, he lays down not 1 but 2 nice blocks...and is looking for #3! https://www.panthers.com/video/jimmy-horn-jr-s-25-yard-run-gives-panthers-red-zone-access-on-first-drive
