A different view of the 6 sacks on Cam Newton

Cam has the ability to audible,  right? The play designs were completely wrong for the situations given.  That said,  cam should have seen the play and called an audible with some shorter routes.

McDermott should have been exactly what Shula and Cam thought he was...

What's not shown is the play clock in these replays.

Far too often, the play takes forever to come in, leading a delayed Huddle break, delayed formation and Cam clapping wildly for the center to snap the ball so we don't get a delay of game for thev3rd time in our HOME stadium.

This telegraphs the snap count and makes for a situation where there is little to no time for audibles to be properly called.

Combine that with slow, long developing routes (still, ugh) and dodgy line protection (ugh), throw in a lack of separation and a dash of Cam pressing while ignoring the layups... you get this.

Shula'd.

Especially under a blitz, ball should be out by 4 seconds. Find the hot route or get rid of the ball.

Exactly... it's even worse when we're in FG range and Cam's taking a sack.

With the way our defense is playing, you got to at least take the 3. I'm not saying the offensive line wasn't at fault some bc they were and Cam had some escapes on breakdowns that could have been sacks for other QBs. Still, at least 3-4 if those sacks are mostly on Cam given the situational football.

So how long before the "trade for Andrew Luck" talk starts lol?  This is a JOKE!  Though I look forward to seeing what folks do there.

This was not our best game on offense.  Timing is bad, execution is really not good enough from Cam and the OL.  Too many yards and points left out there.  The measure of the team will be how well they are able to overcome this particular set of problems.  If they can't...well that's on Ron!

One common theme as well is that most of the sacks came in a 2nd or 3rd & long. They have to find a way to do better on first down to not put themselves in predictable passing situations.

Also, the issue is compounded with snapping the ball with a few seconds remaining on the play clock.

Cam still wants to get the big throw for the first down, him and the coaching staff will have to break that habit by calling more than one player to run underneath. I thought the goal was to have Samuel and CMC work the middle of the field for these types of situations.

It is early and I have only had one cup of coffee.

Let me know what you see in the above posts. To me it looks like a combination of bad play calls/design , QB unwilling to take the layup, and poor protection by the LT mainly.

Mix it all in a bowl and you get 6 sacks.

And WR unable to get open, but maybe you're placing that into call/design.

There is an open outlet in each of those. Newton doesn't need to search for them when he knows where they will be. The outlet is in almost the same place each time.

The tackles were abused and thats a big issue. He is a 7th year MVP veteran who should be a little better dealing with pressure. Throw towards the open outlet.. .avoid the sack. At least some of them.

Audible to a different play. They aren't carved in stone.

    • Yeah but at least that QB would be not short.  I keep going back to the fact other than Wilson no other short QB has ever won a Super Bowl. The success rate of short QBs is very, very low. Like count on one hand low.  Yeah some people would include Brees too but I don’t consider a 6 foot tall QB short, imo.
    • I just rewatched all the highlights from after Bryce being benched. The Bryce hate needs to calm down a little bit. He showed a ton of potential the back half of the year. Same with Legette. They both made great plays when it mattered and a few mistakes when it counted. If we didn’t have a historically awful defense last year we could have ended even a bit better. Going into a brand new season we should be optimistic at least before game one. 2015 no one expected to go anywhere and the team steam rolled the league. I’m not saying that will happen, but hopefully we made strides to improve on the end of last year. Bryce put both Super Bowl teams in a battle last year and if we had a better D we could have taken them both. So at least look forward to the season and not past the season until it at least begins.
    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
