Here's my worry with Wilks.

If you promote Wilks, does he go after his own staff or keep the current staff in place?

Obviously, you can make a good argument for keeping the defensive staff in place. But would he fire the offensive staff?

Remember, these are guys that he's been working with the last several years.

I mean after his defensive performance yesterday, and seeing what happened on offense... I'm not sure there's anyone who wants a better offensive staff more than Wilks, or maybe TD, Pep, Luke, etc.

When it comes to OCs, I actually like fired offensive head coaches.

I am fine with something like that. Hue Jackson if he got fired would be a good option. Sean Payton likely sticking around as Aints HC, barring a meltdown this year, but I'd like him as OC if he were fired. Arians...?

But QB coach, I want someone young and up and coming like McVay (who's already a HC, but you know what I mean).

I'd take Zampese as a QB coach.

If you want somebody who could be up and coming, our assistant quarterback coach right now is Cameron Turner. He's young and he has the Turner family pedigree.

Jon Gruden is a popular unlikely name people throw out there, but I'd honestly love to see what he could do with Cam. Leave Wilks in as DC with Gruden as HC basically just controlling game flow and the offense while letting Wilks do his thing with the defense.

It's been years since he coached so it's not a given Gruden would be successful. But, I can see why some would favor this choice. He has a history of coming to a strong defensive team with a underachieving offense and taking them to the next level. He actually did it in our division with Tampa Bay.

He took over a great defensive team that was held back by Tony Dungy's conservative offensive philosophy (Mike Shula was once his OC...remember). He didn't make many changes, but he did change the offensive scheme and won a super bowl with Brad Johnson at QB and Michael Pittman as starting HB (anyone remember him?). The two starting WR's were Keshawyn Johnson and Keenan McCardell, neither of whom would be considered a burner on the field. I can't even remember the starting TE was on that team. Yet, they won a world championship.

We're more talented at QB, HB, and TE than the 2002 Tampa Bay Bucs, possibly even at the WR spot. Our defense isn't as good, but we're a top 10 squad. I'd be really intrigued if he were interviewed/hired for the job.

GM: Trent Kirchner or Ryan Cowden

HC: Mike McCoy, Josh McDaniels

Actually, McDaniel might be the ideal choice given that we already have two dream players for him to work with...not to mention Olsen.  I'm sure he could devise an offensive game plan that would be explosive and take advantage of what CMC and Samuel can do.  The only question is if Cam would be his choice of a QB.  Cam is more of a gunslinger that relies on his athleticism to make plays rather than the precision pocket passer McDaniel likely prefers.

So, while I like the idea of the offense McDaniel would create, it could come with some massive changes that many fans wouldn't like or be ready for.  And as long as JR is making the call, I don't see an offensive guy ever being brought in as the new HC.

My only fear about this...that was 2002...times have changed

Bill Lazor from Cincinnati. He turned the Bengals offense around. He's a bit abrasive so it would probably only be a short term thing, but  if we could retain Wilks, we could make a run.

I don't think McDaniel's leaves NE unless its something Kubiak going to Denver, a ready made successful situation.

I'd also want to look at Pete Carmichael from the Saints.

    • Lol Atlanta looks to have lost their young edge rusher, has no 1st round pick, a complete mess at QB, a new coaching staff… And we swept them this year. Says what they think of us.
    • I mean, you can only go so far with the propping up. When a guy's numbers are as bad overall as Bryce's you have to try to find specific niches to sell. It's just funny that they're honing in on where he's probably weakest to try to prop him up. Whether it's a pro-Bryce conspiracy or not, it echos my chief complaint about PFF's analysis for years. When your purely statistical analysis badly skews from the eye test of actually watching the games, it should be screaming at you that you need to modify your system not double down on it. PFF is awesome at compiling stats but their grade systems are highly flawed and they never seem to try to improve them.
    • Then why is Byce also last in other PFF stats?  The deep ball thrower stat by PFF can simply be flawed vs some conspiracy trying to prop up a QB on a team that a former employee now works for.  Both of these guys were also hired AFTER the Panthers had already drafted Bryce.  Trying to prop him up with a made up stat while he struggled would be a detriment to their own team honestly.
