When Can Athletes Return to Sports Following a High Ankle Sprain?

Despite the fact that most athletes who experience a low ankle sprain can return to sports within one to three weeks following the injury, those players who sustain a high ankle sprain are often out of sports for four to six weeks depending upon the injury severity. Sports that involve cutting and pivoting, such as football, are especially difficult to play in the setting of a high ankle sprain. The player’s position may also dictate the length of recuperation as running backs or linebackers who have to quickly change direction are often the most disabled with this injury. For those athletes who require surgery, sports activity can usually be resumed in approximately four months. Therefore, surgery for this injury typically results in an inability to return the same season.

Once an athlete sustains an ankle sprain, he or she, unfortunately, is more prone to future injuries. It is for this reason that most NFL teams require their players to have their ankles taped or braced during competition in an attempt to reduce the risk for recurrence.

I hate to see this. I see a little DeSean Jackson in Samuel, both positives and negatives. Positives with blazing speed and can be a mismatch in the slot vs an outside linebacker in coverage, but a negative by always being hurt with injuries (hamstring previously, now ankle). Hoping he recovers well -- he could definitely be an x-factor if he's on the field.

    • yeah, Panther PR has done the Tepper is taking a backseat PR tour before.   It wasn't true at all the first time we saw them attempt that.   All the stuff you are referencing is stuff produced and put out by the Panthers.  I'm not acting like owners aren't in the war room.   I'm just saying Tepper is a proven commodity.  He is what he is.  And his tenure with BOTH his professional sports teams tell the exact same story about him.   He is not patient.  He didn't show patience last year.  He moved on from an absurd investment 2 games into the season.....and a frankly unimaginable turnaround by Bryce that was only allowed by injury reset some things.  I'm sure a billion times Raiders or Dallas or whatever fans convinced themselves their owners turned a new leaf too.  I'm not buying that.  There just isn't anything supporting Tepper isn't Tepper IMO.
    • Well last year the first team offense struggled against the Bills 3rd string defense. First string offense needed to convert a 4th down to score a TD.  If the starters play against backups and do what they are supposed to do, score easily, I’d say the reps are worth it. Would make me feel better. Unlike last preseason.
    • This right here. You also don’t want your 2 nd string oline going against their starting Dline and risk injury to whoever is taking snaps
