Devin Funchess has been killing it since the Benjamin trade.

Keep in mind Jerry rice and TO started playing at age 23. Funchess is on pace to beat both of them in age 23 season stats

Calm down that's JERRY FREKIN RICE you're talking about and TO another HOF. I love Funchess, but he doesn't hold a candle to them.

]This thread isn't necessarily about KK,  it's about one Devin Funchess who received a lot of poo for being a bad receiver---not NFL-caliber,  and all kinds of erroneous views about him when he wasn't really getting opportunities.

I was going to start a thread myself, noting his obvious improvement and skills at route running. I tried to tell a lot of you all along,  but you just refused to listen.

By the way,  he's only 23 years young,  so it's not inconceivable that he ultimately turns out as G-man's best pick. Of course he is not there today,  but stop selling him short (pun not intended). You've already had your season to beat him over the head about how not good he is.  Now,  that time has past.  It's done. Look forward to his gradual improvement as a legitimate weapon for us for years to come.

My biggest want this offseason is a true burner at WR a la Ted Ginn. If we can go into next season with Funchess playing the 1, Burner in the 2 and Samuel in the slot we could be devastating.

Also a young TE Olsen can groom would be fantastic

Use our extra 3rd to trade up for Anthony Miller in the 2nd round (WR from Memphis) , and use our regular 3rd rounder and maybe some later picks to trade up in the 3rd to get Troy Fumagali (TE from Wisconsin). Draft Arden Key (DE LSU) Sam Hubbard (DE Ohio State), or Ronnie Harrison (S from Alabama) with pick 1.

I’ve said over and over that he played well today.  He has 4 sacks on the year. 2 today against backups.  That means he has 2 total over 11 games.  He’s being paid 16 mil a year.  He needs to get more pressure than he has over the course of the season.

Do you just talk out your ass? He had 4 going into yesterday and now has 6... its likely that he will finish with 8+ which is outstanding for a DT...

Also you seriously overate sacks.

People were taking Funchess down in the country (out back...behind a barn) during last off-season.  He should not have received anywhere near as much criticism that he got. It's amazing what a little playing time and belief (by the coaches) will do for a gamer's perception.  He's taken his opportunity and run with it. I could see it the latter part of his rookie year.  He'll get even better as time goes on.

Using sacks to determine the effectiveness of DT's is a flawed method.  Its not that good of a method for DE's, but its especially bad for DT's.  There really isn't a accurate stat for determining the effectiveness of a DT, except perhaps the overall success of the defense.  You really just have to watch the game, and see how many times they disrupt the plays, get penetration, or get pushed aside.  In my opinion, Short and Star and at times butler and Horton, have overall been very effective this year.

But if you are going to use Sacks, then its probably best to note that Short is #4 among all DT's in sacks this year.  Three players are tied for 1st with 7 a piece, Short has 6.

he’s getting a lot more opportunities now and showing how he can produce. his lack of earlier production was never a reflection of his talent level, it’s more of a reflection of how much our offensive system supports receiver production, which is very little beyond WR1 and TE.

And people get on me about CMC too. He's leading the team in yards from scrimmage and I dont think CMC is in anywhere near the ideal offensive system for his style of play. Being the starting #1 option for your position works wonders for your stats and production, as well as being in the right system with the right players and coaches .

I've been pleseantly surprised by Funchess's output lately. I hope he can keep it up. He certainly has gotten smoother and less spastic out there.

I don't have stats here but I'd wager during his recent stretch, that the majority of his success has come off of that back-shoulder comeback on the side line. I know he had one against Rhodes yesterday, and I think he ran like 5 of them against the dolphins. I know he's worked some slants and outs in there too but that one route has been a staple. We'll probably see a pick on that route before too long but it does look like there is some sort of option built in to counter an agressive CB - we saw this against the Jets.

Just something that stuck out.

Byrd is at a crossroads. I think that these next few games are going to determine whether he becomes one to be taken seriously,  or entrenches himself as JAG.

I think like Funchess he needs more opportunities. What I will say about Byrd is he catches with his hands

Funchess can be a big piece off play-action. If we power run it more and continue being successful, you'll see things really open up
