I'm surprised to be honest with you. I thought when he left Minnesota that was it. He'd gone back to Del Mar and he and Nancy, his wife, they were done with football and going to enjoy the beach. So when [Carolina] made the change and fired Mike Shula, I talked to some friends and I said I bet they hire Ron Turner, who is Norv's brother, who was a consultant on the staff this year, and he's been an offensive coordinator and a head coach. I thought they'd hire him as offensive coordinator.

Then the next thing I hear is Norv's name surfacing. I was thinking while I understand it because Ron Rivera was on Norv's staff when Norv was the head coach at San Diego and they're friends - and who wouldn't want to hire Norv if you get an opportunity to? But I didn't think he'd come back. I spoke with him the other night when he was in Charlotte, and he was certainly considering it. I'm not sure if that's a done deal as we speak or not.

But it will be interesting to follow because what Norv has been, and the quarterbacks he has worked with have pretty much been, pocket passers. And I believe Norv's as good as anybody as a coordinator. Can he get Cam going? Yeah I think so. But Cam has not shown to be that type of guy. Clearly he wants to run the football, he's great at running the football. I think it would be a different challenge for Norv to incorporate the things that Cam does well into this scheme. He can certainly do it. But I'm surprised on a lot of fronts with that one.

Turner has done almost everything an offensive coordinator can do in the NFL. He has won Super Bowls, worked with stars, developed rookies and earned widespread praise for his performance. But he has never worked with a player like Cam Newton, a dual-threat with as much physical talent as any quarterback in the league. The Panthers have been criticized for their scheme quite a bit during Newton's career, but Turner could see the Panthers as one last challenge, a chance to meld his own offensive concepts with the talents of Newton and what has worked for him in the past to create an entirely new system.

So even if Aikman is surprised at Turner's return, it is definitely explainable. The combination of Newton and Turner should be deadly for years to come.

The only negatives I’ve heard about this hire are from mouth breathers on the interwebs. Most experts and people well respected around the league think this hire will be a home run.

Most experts and well respected people around the league have always spoke highly of Shula also. Only heard bad things from the fans which is to be expected.

I think this marriage is going to put us at the top of the NFL.

Just the thought of seeing Cam launch those bombs is worth the price of admission.

I know much focus will be on Cam's weapons but for the love of god make sure we address some of the weak spots we have on defense.

who is he going to launch it to? Samuel cant stay healthy and was never  a deep threat in the games he did play in. Byrd wasnt  a deep threat in the games he played. Clay has speed but very suspect hands and he didnt establish himself as a deep threat either.

Id hate to rely on a bunch of dudes that had an entire season to show at least some flashes at being deep threats but none ever materialized in 17 games

If so, Shula should land a new gig quickly and we'll see.  Why didn't anyone want him after the 2015 run?

Because he really isn't that good.  You have to weed through the fluff of the commentators on TV.  They are paid to pump up the teams and coaches.

The difference being that regardless of what the so called experts say the truth is in the actual success.  Shula didn't have any, Norv has it in spades.

I agree.  Norv has done it multiple times.  Cams production went down when Chud left.  Shula just plain sucked.  Norv will be better than Shula, no doubt.  We are looking at two winning seasons in a row, for the first time.

    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
