Norv Turner can turn Christian McCaffrey into Panthers’ ‘premiere back’

(Turner’s offense) is all about rhythm and timing. And really, he wants to run the football,” Tomlinson, who retired after the 2011 season and is an NFL Network analyst, told the Observer this week. “That sets up everything else that he wants to do through the passing game.

“But he likes to get the running game going.”

Head coach Ron Rivera and Shula admitted they had not found McCaffrey’s “ceiling,” and they spent a large part of the year figuring out where he fit into their offense.

But that won’t be the case under Turner, Tomlinson said.

Turner was the offensive coordinator in San Diego in 2001, when Tomlinson was a rookie. That season, Tomlinson gained 1,236 yards rushing and 367 receiving. He said that success was partially because of Turner’s understanding of how to best use him.

“I think the thing that sets him apart is that he really understands how to use his personnel,” Tomlinson said. “When you’re working with him, he always gives you the sense of, if he calls a play for you, it’s going to work every single time. He makes you feel like he designs plays just for you to be successful.”

Tomlinson said a versatile back such as McCaffrey can take on a “premiere role” in Turner’s offense, because Turner adjusts his offense for what works well for his personnel, and scraps what doesn’t.

Carolina will still favor a power run scheme – but not often with McCaffrey, Tomlinson said. But he doesn’t expect the Panthers to rely on Stewart, either. In fact, he doesn’t expect Stewart, who has one year left on his contract, to return in 2018.

“They’re going to draft a running back, a physical style of running back, so that they can run the ball up inside a little bit and loosen defenses up for Christian to get back in there and do his thing on the perimeter,” Tomlinson said. “That’s how Norv has done it in the past. I’m almost positive that he’s going to create the same type of formula that he’s used everywhere else, and they’re going to get a running back to run the ball inside.”

LaDainian Tomlinson just made my day.  I am excited to see this offense.

And for those who say Cam does not fit what Turner does....

Instead of trying to change Tomlinson’s style, Turner adjusted his play-calling.

I can't believe we wasted so much time and talent with Shula. Pisses me off.

Can't wait to see a guy that actually knows what he's doing and knows how to use his personnel correctly.

Is it surprising though? Rivera is a mediocre Coach, what do you expect my good lad?

And how many people defended him year after year because they knew no better.

I am not totally in agreement with LT that Stewart is gone but if he used Armah (similar role as Tolbert) and Stewart (or his replacement) in the running game.  Defenses are going to have fits with this offense.  Turner using his vertical attack and Cam's throws.  Stacking the box to prevent the run will step right into what he wants to do.

Turner will get the players he needs and IMO has many of the tools already on the roster (famous DG line) to really put us in upper echelon in offenses.

One thing that keeps running through my mind is how often we saw Rivers scramble for a 1st down.  With receivers taking DBs down the field.  CMC and Olsen pulling LBs to cover them.  The middle of the field could be wide open for some designed and improvised runs for Cam.

With our (hopefully improved) defense and this type of offense.  Teams are not going to be happy to see the Carolina Panthers on their schedule.

2018 the Panthers are taking their throne back atop of the NFCS.

I hate that I was right about him, but from the first mention of him coming in as QB coach I didn't have a good feeling. Making him OC was a horrible decision. It's a shame chud took norv out from under our noses, but as soon he was available again we should have nabbed him. oh well...he's here now and shulas is gone. My optimism is growing again.

Tomlinson is about the size of McCaffrey as well. I could see it, honestly.

Ehhhh, CMC is a touch taller, but at the combine LT weighed in 19 pounds heavier.

I think that CMC will always be a touch on the lighter side...very similar to Faulk or McCoy.

I am 9 1/2hrs ahead of EST.  So I was already sound asleep when Rivera finally pulled the plug on Shula.  When I saw it posted I was in shock.

All I could think about is a thoroughbred horse with an overweight jockey (shula) sitting on his back expecting him to win the race.

Now we have a Super Bowl winning Jockey ready to show what this thoroughbred horse (Cam and the offense) can do with the right jockey.
