2018 Roster turnover

Reports are that we currently have 15 million ( http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/cap/ ) to 20 million in cap space( https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/carolina-panthers )

We also will need to allocate close to 7 million for our upcoming rookie class.

Here are our top 6 free agents:

Norwell, Star,Gano, Peppers,Derek Anderson and Ed Dickson.

Peppers cap hit last year was 3.5 Million and would likely cost the same if he decides to return. Gano's last contract was a 4 year 12.4 million deal and he's coming off his best season yet, so not sure what his value on the market may be.

There are ways to free up some space and we seem to be poised to free up 9 million just by parting ways with Stewart,( 3.7 Million) CJ, (3.25 million) and Shepard (2.125).

Other potential cap casualties include Ryan Kalil (6.8 Million) Kurt Coleman (2.65  Million) and Mike Adams (2.1) Million.

Some of those players could potentially have current backups move to a full time role but there is nobody on the roster ready to take over both safety spots. I also don't think anyone is  or should comfortable with CAP being the 1-2 punch CMC.I am also not convinced that Love/Butler could fill the void left by Star or that Moton or Larsen filling in for Norwell would not cause a huge drop off.

The franchise tag is just north of 14 Million for either Star or Norwell and there has been no indication we intend to use the tag on either.

Which free agents do you think we should push to keep and are there any players we should target heavily with the money saved if we choose to let Star/ Norwell walk?

Gettleman did not execute his philosophy very well but I did agree with him in principle that you should use free agency to free yourself up to truly go BPA in the draft. With that being said and the lack of space available with 2 of our top players hitting free agency this year that job seems pretty tough this year and for the first time in a long time I don't have a strong opinion on how we should move forward.

Keep Pep and Gano ...  Wait on Dickson see if he gets signed by another team.. If not bring him back for cheap.

Cut Cj Stew, Shep, one of the vet safeties (Colemen) and Kali....

Let Star and Norwell walk..

I look at the draft and if we cannot find much help in the draft, we need to grab a free agent---currently, we have about 10 needs (some are depth and developmental, like T). At any  rate, PRACTICALLY considering what the market cost might be for each player, here is what I would do in free agency:

Position

Name

Estimated Salary

Free Safety

Terrence Brooks

$4,500,000

Strong Safety

Brad McDouglad

$4,750,000

Wide Receiver

Paul Richardson

$7,500,000

Quarterback

Joe Webb

$2,500,000

Tight End

Tre Burton

$6,000,000

Defensive End

Julius Peppers

$5,000,000

    • Yep, the Panthers powers that be seem desperate to convince themselves he can clear the bare minimum bar of demanding a legit franchise QB contract. Canales seems to be laying the groundwork here of building the case that all of Bryce's shortcomings are still there and even more glaring than you may have thought while his strengths aren't nearly as strong as you had hoped and aren't near enough to make up for the lack of pure physical tools. When you have historically anomalous lack of measurables you need historically anomalous positive intangibles to make up for it. That was always issue with Bryce as a prospect. Like Parcells said when evaluating him, "he better walk on water".
    • I'm honestly not sure how much "west coast" plays into it. There's a huge difference between Tucson, AZ and Spokane, WA where he spent the previous two decades of his career. Chapel Hill is significantly different than Spokane but way more similar to it than Tucson. You're talking about a pretty significant plane ride to get back home either way. He and his family would be flying private and direct so we're talking about a 3ish hour flight vs. a 5ish hour flight. That's basically a wash. It's not like he went from Gonzaga to another PNW program. Tucson is a dramatic departure from Washington state. Honestly a far bigger departure climatically and scenery wise than Chapel Hill would be.
