Alright he isnt a FA this year and everyone wants to talk about Norwell right now.

That being said, do we start looking hard at extending him?

With news that the Giamts may be planning to throw big time $$ at Norwell and the Colts could be a big bidder as well.  I think its time to move on and just keep some hope that something happens.

Williams had a heckuva season last year.  And graded out the #3 RT.  He is begginning to look like a stud.  Problem is this is going to be the last year of his contract. We dont lock him up this offseason and he goes on to have another year like this season in a contract year.  We could be waving bye to him.

We could potentially lose our Center, RT, and LT (unless Matt improves, next year in the opt out year of his contract he is good as gone). This after losing Norwell this year.  Thats one heckuva a turnover in 1 season.  And with other big needs, there is a real possibility we dont go OL early in this draft

Williams graded out third?  That's actually pretty darn impressive.  I can't believe you let a top tackle - left or right - hit free agency if you can avoid it.  We may be waiting until the retirements go through after next year though.  Will free up a good bit of money for us.

We should absolutely have extension talks this offseason. It would take some risk acceptance from both sides. The Panthers would have to be willing to sign him to an extension based off of one year of performance while Williams would have to accept a lower figure than he would certainly demand next season on the open market after another successful season. Given the state of the OT position as a whole in the NFL currently, I'd try to get that dude locked up long-term ASAP. Any quality or even serviceable OT that is under 30 years old who hits the open market right now is gonna get PAID. See: Kalil, Matt.

Eh I kind of argue that we should be shopping him right now to see what we could get, I'm not as high on him as the PFF grades. Feel like he got some generous grading all year long compared to his actual play when he was on an island.

That being said if the coaching staff and front office (whoever that may be) believe in him as a long term answer at RT then I would obviously be happy with a long-term deal negotiated sooner rather than later.

Frankly what we should do is lock up Daryl AND Norwell and draft a center and plan on Moton being our LT. Our entire line could be set. No idea what we’ll do though. Seems possible we lose Norwell but not a guarantee. Hope we can keep him.

Daryl was solid as a freaking boulder all year, the man deserved the praise and 2nd team all pro he got this year. Yes it has only been 1 year and it would be nice to see if he can sustain it before commiting long term money to him but this past year he absolutely was a great player.

    • I see progress and improvements. We aren't the same team we were even at the beginning of this year. You want to harp on the past while I am all about the present and future. Do I know thinks are going to be great moving forward? Actually I don't but I prefer to look at the good instead of the bad. Since he is surely going to be the QB the rest of this year barring injury, I am going to root for him to succeed instead of fail. I always said if we are going to finish at 500 for the year I prefer we win at home since I will be there and want to see wins and crying opposing fans like the cowboys. So far mission accomplished. Now we have to show we can win on the road.
    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
