Norwell was never going to be franchised. Just was not going to happen. A team has to have a kicker. Why would you not bring back your pro bowl kicker from the year before?

Franchising Gano has jack poo to do with Norwell's contract situation.

On a franchise tag? Paying him honestly 5 times what he’s worth? Get the fug out of here.

I know Hurney likes having his ball kicker around at all times. That sick fug.

But this is football.

stud kickers are out there. they all have the distance and the accuracy. just need to find a guy who isnt a nut case in the head. see Roberto Aguayo. allocating the money here isnt smart against the cap. sign two UDFA, let them compete with both guys knowing its theirs to lose, and let the best man win.

It is fair that there are some good kickers in this draft too. You could use a lower round pick on the best kicker available and save money.

No, rookies aren't guaranteed, but it's not guaranteed Gano doesn't hit the wall either.  Kickers tend to fall off fast once they go.

It's just a matter of where you feel more comfortable gambling.

Who else would the Panthers seriously consider tagging? I could see Norwell, but personally I don't think it's smart to invest so much into a single position, especially when you have a second round pick sitting on the bench that played guard in school.

3 were drafted. 2 you can argue were better than Gano last season and moving forward.

You couldn’t argue any of the rookies from last year were better than Gano. You could argue they were better values and I’d agree with that. And they are better moving forward as well because of that value aspect of it. Gano is a solid option but not close to elite and the only way I pay a kicker more than close to vet min is if they are elite, clutch and dependable like a Dan Bailey or Justin Tucker, Gostkowski, Vinatieri, etc.

I was being sarcastic to the post I quoted. Gano was statically the 2nd best kicker in the league, of course no rookie was better than him

We could but good luck signing any free agents even bottom of the barrel guys

We can cut dead weight and sign both Norwell and other FAs but here is what is going to happen. We will tag Gano, let both star and Norwell walk, use Amini in his spot, we will not sign any help at WR or CB, we will sign stop gaps to fill Stars position, all the while paying Kalil and Davis to ride off into the sunset on a 6-10 year.

That would be a smart gamble not a Hurney gamble.

Yep. By many accounts Butker didn't have as good of a year as Gano, not many kickers did, hence his alternate Pro Bowl award.

However there were plenty of kickers that were a better value last year and moving forward, Butker being one of them.

What pissed me off most about last season with Gano was we kept him and then Rivera was too much of a pussy to even trot his ass out to try for any 50 yarders. Dude might have the strongest leg in the NFL and he only attempted 1 kick over 50 all regular season (which he missed).

I would have understood that far better if we had Butker on the roster, protect the rookie's psyche and all, but we did it to our 8 year vet kicker who is being paid like a top 5 kicker in the league.

It was dildos

Just because they tag him does not mean he will not sign a long term deal. His last deal was 12.4 million over 4 years. Will probably sign a 16 million 4 year deal.

But you go ahead and run around like your hair is on fire. Don't let common sense or reason change the way you act.

    • All I heard was uber rides, weight trainers, and t shirts??? Maybe some meals too........ What a monster and he should be tossed in a rusty wood chipper!!!1!11!!!!!
    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
