Players Association talking about Richardson scandal

There is actually one place where this whole thing is most likely going to hit Richardson pretty hard.

His legacy.

Jonathan Jones and others have all pointed out that Richardson is "obsessed" (their word) with being remembered as a great man. The team was meant to be a living monument to that.

Instead, he could wind up being remembered as a dirty old racist.

General consensus is that when he agreed to sell the team, it was with the implied  understanding that the NFL wouldn't bother to investigate him because, as mentioned, what else could they do to him?

But now the league that used to revere him, the league whose cause he championed in CBA negotiations, the league whose logo he left at the center of the Panthers field out of loyalty, is likely to put a nasty smear on his memory.

It's legitimately tempting to feel bad about that, but the ultimate reality is that all this is nobody's fault but his own.

I hate to see things end this way, but turning a blind eye to it isn't an option.

Does your legacy really matter after you’re dead? It’s not like he has to live for another 40 years as a shamed man. He’s going to die a billionaire doing whatever he wants.

America has about a 30 second memory.

I agree, but Richardson is from a generation that didn't have a culture wide attention deficit disorder.

How you were remembered meant something in his generation.

I don't know that Richardson will be remembered as a "dirty old racist," but I think that it will be very fair to remember him as a hypocrite. No one is perfect, but you can't do the things that he is accused of doing and publicly hold your players to such a high standard without looking very bad. Grace and class, my ass. I would say that I'm surprised, but I'd be lying. Don't portray yourself as a nice guy when you're really an egomaniacal asshole, because when you get caught (and you will) people will have little mercy.

That's a fair point. And I'll admit I hadn't pondered that particular aspect of it.

Apparently you boys don't understand how America's 1% stick together. Goodell and Richardson are good friends, most of the owners group appreciate him and all that JR did in 2010/2011 for the CBA on the NFL's behalf won't be forgotten. Or keeping the NFL shield in the middle of our field. If he's not banned from the NFL, expect to see him, even at 80, on some NFL select committee dealing with the upcoming CBA negotiations and not for free. He'll get paid more than most of us would ever dream we could make in our lifetime. He can do it from home, no need to go to NYC. He can remain involved in the NFL even from the edges.

Yes, he can be punished but I don't think he will be. Not as extensively as he should be. Of course depending on the investigation's findings, he should be at least banned from the stadium and front offices and any Panther events including training camp. Besides fines. Maybe he doesn't want to sell the team but, trust me, in the end he won't be hurting at all from it. Hypocrisy will be his final legacy. And I won't be shedding any tears for him. Not one.

I think that's what Richardson expected too. He was probably counting on the "boys club" to cover him.

But the NFL took some major hits for the fiasco surrounding Ray Rice, and then took more over Josh Brown.  And they know in today's climate there are people chomping at the bit to go after them if they blow it again.

That's a big reason why they outsourced this investigation to an independent firm.

Well, the NFLPA can bump their gums all they want, but the fact is the NFLPA and the players have zero involvement or responsibility in the league's management and policing of its owners.

Nope, but I do get the sense they have a "serves you right" feeling about Richardson right now.
