Dontari Poe to Carolina Panthers/3 yrs $27m

I was excited about Poe as soon as I saw the news, but had it in my head he had to be closing in on 30 years old. looking it up and seeing that he is 27 and we have him for 3 years. This is a tremendous, long-term solution for our DL. Still need edge rushers (and hopefully Hall turns into something), but the middle should be stout.

Good post. Sometimes people forget that injuries happen. Good depth is important. It’s one of the reasons why I wouldn’t mind going Daniels or Hernandez in the 1st or Price in the 2nd. We’ve seen what injuries have done to us in 2016 when we weren’t deep at all at OL.

I wouldn't call '16 not deep. That was just a cavalcade of death along the line.

2nd string LT, Norwell, 3rd string center, 3rd/4th string RG, 3rd string RT at one point.
We would have been ok if it was just one or two, but quite literally everyone but Norwell played out of position due to injury that year. It was comical.

Poe/ Short is the best DT combination since Jenkins/Buckner, and maybe our best ever...  And arguably the best in the NFL going into next year.  As bummed as I was about losing Star, I never thought we would be able to upgrade to a player like Poe.

why did we need to pay another DT?  We spent a first rounder on Butler for him to be a glorified backup? fug the 2016 draft class man!

Because games are won in the trenches. Almost every Super Bowl  team has a good offensive/ defensive line. Butler may do well but DTs don’t play every snap so you need to have good back ups. Also one injury and we will be screwed at almost any position. This helps a lot.

now if we can only end up with a good offensive line.

Like it or not, the philosophy during the Rivera era has always been to concentrate on the front seven and try to piece together a secondary on the back end, especially at safety.

To go along with this, I think some people aren't familiar with Mathieu's game.  He's not a true safety.  To maximize his potential, he's going to need looks at nickel CB.  At that point though you are just wasting Munnerlyn and/or Elder because, at least/especially in the case of Munnerlyn, he can't play on the outside.

Did anyone expect a Smith, Breeland, Poe haul this free agency? I’ve always been super critical of Hurney...but it’s hard to complain about these moves. Give us a double dip at safety in the draft and I think we are set up for a nice run this season.

A year younger than Star. Much bigger.

Star 6'2, 311, 28 years old

Poe 6'3,346, 27 years old

He wasn't that big last year, played at 330. Falcons had him slim down to play a different role than he did in KC. In KC, he was a 3/4 NT, constantly taking on DTs, He was an attacking DT  in Atlanta's scheme.

You guys got a good guy and a good player, at a good price. Falcons could have made room for him, not sure why they didn't. They may be thinking of the all the youngsters they have on defense coming up on their second contracts next couple of years.

I wonder if we aren't going to waste Munnerlyn already? Seemed like he really fell out of favor with the coaching staff last season. IMO, that just increases Mathieu's value to us. We already like playing LBs and safeties at that "buffalo nickel" position. We said the addition of Shaq would allow us to stay in our base D more often but we all saw how that played out. Maybe the addition of Matheiu actually would allow that. We'd already have a safety on the field who can drop down as a nickel CB depending on matchups.
