Sale process may now drag out past May

Panthers sale could drag on longer than expected

The sale of the Carolina Panthers may drag on longer than previously expected.

Although it's likely the team's new owner will be identified before the NFL owners May 21-23 meeting in Atlanta, it's possible the transaction won't close until after that gathering, according to a source familiar with the process who was not authorized to speak publicly.

At the league meeting in March in Orlando, owners such as the New England Patriots' Robert Kraft had said the hope was to have a winner in place to vote on in May. The next owners meeting is not until October, but the source said it would not be unusual for a deal to be approved outside a regular meeting.

A league source, who was not authorized to speak on the record about the sale, told the Observer while there's still time to hold a vote at the May meeting, the vote could also take place at a later date.

While it's unclear where the bidding stands, a longer-than-expected timeline could indicate there is more wrangling going on during the confidential sales process.

Just this week, Richardson's son, Mark, threw his weight behind one of the bidders, Charleston financial services CEO Ben Navarro. In an interview with the Observer, Mark Richardson said he couldn't imagine "a better person being the next owner than him.”

Meanwhile, another bidder, steel company CEO Alan Kestenbaum, was in Charlotte again for a visit this week, according to multiple sources.

Was this something that came out before or after the JR victim story?

I'd have to believe this is slightly before the victim exposed JR, but I only did just skim this thread

Article was just posted twenty minutes ago and was updated afterward

I don't think it's just a coincidence the victim report came out now. Somebody "the NFL" is trying to force Richardson to sell to their choice of Tepper, at a reduced rate. It honestly makes me sick because 1. Richardson is definitely a creepy dirty old man and 2. The NFL never really had a bidding process as much as a show to hand off a franchise to the next guy in line. I personally don't believe Tepper has the best intentions for Charlotte and would be willing to throw us to the wolves to make a buck and definitely makes us vulnerable to be relocated. On the other hand, if Navarro somehow wins out I could see the NFL retaliate with several BS penalties that will cripple the team forever.

Won't surprise me in the least if the NFL ends up having to force JR out by legal means.

Some folks thought the SI story might force Richardson to sell it sooner.

Increasingly sounding like Richardson is being an a--hole.

They could lose that battle but the good thing is that nobody involved wants that to happen.

Richardson might.

He could see forcing them to have to vote on him as a form of payback, a way of making them "look him in the eye" so to speak.

We already know he doesn't believe he did anything wrong.
