Theory about Lamar Jackson

Mr. Scot

Florio thinks Belichick might have tricked Ozzie Newsome into taking him.

Remember when the Patriots had quietly visited with Lamar Jackson? Remember when they secretly worked him out?

Remember when they took him with the 23rd pick in round one? Oh wait, they didn’t.

Remember when they took him with the 31st pick in round one? I think you get the point.

And this is broader point: There’s so much bullcrap being peddled to reporters who are under so much pressure to fill the void between free agency and the draft with news that it’s really all just noise. Yes, we pass the noise along (we have to fill the void, too), but we do so by adding the caveat that, with so much smoke, it’s nearly impossible to find the fire.

On Thursday night, the Patriots had two cracks at Jackson, and they didn’t take him. At pick 31, they opted for a running back — a running back! — over a five-year commitment from the potential successor to Tom Brady. Running backs are anywhere, everywhere. Quarterbacks that may revolutionize the game while also replacing one of the best players in NFL history are hard to find.

Jackson was supposedly the if-you-can’t-beat-’em-join-’em choice by the Patriots, who have struggled to handle mobile quarterbacks since Colin Kaepernick ran roughshod on them in 2012. And yet they passed on Lamar Jackson, twice.

The media may not have been the only ones who took the cheese. Remember when former Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds was being dubbed the quintessential Patriot? The Pats didn’t draft him; the Ravens did, in round six. And Reynolds never did anything in the NFL.

Did the Ravens become more interested in Jackson because the Patriots were pretending to want him? We’ll never know the truth because no one would ever admit that. Still, there’s a chance that New England feigned interest in Jackson in order to get someone else to take a swing on a guy Bill Belichick privately thinks will be a bust.

Regardless of whether the Jedi mind trick was applied to Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome, Belichick’s decision to pass on Jackson with not one but two first-round picks only confirms my belief that, if Belichick were interested in Jackson, we wouldn’t have known it until the moment Belichick drafted him.

What happened to New England's interest in Lamar Jackson?

Belichick certainly has a rep for pulling stunts like this, and Lord knows he's pulled off similar scams before, but Ozzie Newsome is no dummy.

Truth be told, whether you take this seriously or not probably depends a lot on your opinion of Lamar Jackson.

Yeah.

Actually, Lamar landing on the Ravens is really good. They do have an actual decent OC and set-up Lamar can slide in and command.

As long as they aren't sentimental on Flacco or something, Lamar can elevate them. He's a better passer than most give him credit, and he's got that running threat from the QB position.

This may be nothing more than Florio stroking New England fans. I think Baltimore's been thinking about Jackson for a long time. The signing of RG3 is part of that. RG3 played a similar game but has learned enough to teach LJ to protect himself.

Teams bring in guys they don't pick all the time. Only with BB does it turn into some evil plot or mind game.

Given his rep though, it's kinda fair. Heck, general consensus was that he only picked up Tyler Gaffney the way he did to piss us off.

He's definitely a conniving, vindictive son of a b--ch.

    • When Twitter first changed to X I was able to get it to embed with various tricks. When those stopped working, I stopped trying and don't really blame anyone now for posting links and not embedding.  I'm not going to download a new browser just to be able to embed on this forum.  Hopefully Igo was serious when he said he was going to fix it.
    • The Carolina Reaper story, we will get a night game early but probably away to New Orleans or Tampa
    • 100% fact. people forget Stern was a NYer.  Theres been what 10 picks since that were gifted to teams? Even Lecommie said he believe the lotto was rigged when the Cavs just happened to get the #1 pick for the local hero. They also got the #1 Kyrie Evring when Lecommie leftd for miami. I bet that's when he started the Diddy parties too... Zion Timmy Duncan  AD Rose to bulls Victor Wembanyama Cleveland got 2 more #1 overall AFTER Erving fixing the lebron BS.  Yao Ming got to pick his sity... That's all that I remember, even one is total joke, https://www.si.com/nba/bill-simmons-accurately-predicted-mavericks-would-win-nba-lottery-back-in-march   Just more or less WWE, but at least WWE refs are not criminals. Players bet and shaved points, Im 100% sure of, especially if Michael Jordan did for years.... I am shocked I lasted until Larry brown with the bobcats before I quit being a fan. Any NBA new I see is not by my will/want to follow.  Total joke, I hate the government more than NBA, but they should expose the fraud that league is so it can dissolves and a new better league can start. Maybe then the players will play in all the games like years ago......I mean LOLLOLOLOL you can not play back-2-back games when a breath of air is a fool?? Total joke, I hope the whole league folds. frauds!! I can not respect any owner that allows this.
