Carolina Panthers Select Jermaine Carter Jr. - LB - Maryland

It’s the 6th round! Swing for the fences and take a player with high upside and question marks.

Ateman or ESB as developmental big WR to play behind Funchess and possibly replace him if he leaves.

 J. Jones, Harrison, Toth(2 year wait) as OT depth.

Tons of options before resorting to LB depth.

Our inability to hit on late round picks hasn't exactly been an issue limited to Hurney.

Late rounders are low-probability propositions for virtually every team. It's the 2nd through 5th rounds that really hurt Hurney. You gotta build the meat of your roster in those rounds and batted way too low of a percentage in those rounds.

Yes it's a crapshoot. I'm not denying Hurney's failures. Frankly I'm tired of talking about drafts from a decade or more ago when the failures from drafts just within the last 5 years have and continue to hold us back. From the draft all we've got to show for in our secondary in 5 years is Bradberry. Then you add 1st rounders who aren't even on the team anymore like KB, and luxury first rounders like Shaq and Butler. The best we've managed at DE in the draft was one stellar game from Kony Ealy and we drafted him in the second round. I mean I get it that this draft could be yet another in a string of failures, but all I'm saying is there's been plenty to go around and it's pitiful when we have had a Super Bowl capable core.

Undersized LB with marginal NFL athleticism. We honestly probably could've gotten this guy as a UDFA.

How is:

“could’ve got him as an UDFA”

a discussion?

Way to cherry pick a post with a partial quote that misconstrues what was actually posted.

Pretty much every writer/source you read out there.  Nfl.com, walterfootball, you name it

And yes the OT fell when most were projected much higher, it happens.

I probably would have as big a issue with it, if it were not Hurney as his track record.  Itd be me refusing to take free throw shooting lessons from Dwight Howard and everyone telling me im dumb for refusing since he's a NBA player

I get what you are saying, but the irony is, we blast the GMs when the experts you mention above are wrong as if the GMs are the one's getting it wrong.  I think I saw the TE from Oklahoma still there in the seventh round.  A bunch of sites had him as a day 1 or two pick.

Love the player, hate the pick. He's reported to be smart, high-character, high-work ethic, special teams demon and a team leader. May have taken him a little high, but you can say that about pretty much every pick we made. I like him, but I feel like he could have been had later, and there was talent at positions of greater need.

Exactly. Plus even with impending FA, OG was a bigger depth and starter need than LB. instead of grabbing Wyatt Teller like the Bills just a few picks later, we grab a undersized guy that's 3rd string with 2nd string upside? At best he is James Anderson part two
