One of the very best draft analyst ranks Panthers as 3rd best draft in the league

3 -- Carolina Panthers

1 (24) - D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland

2 (55) - Donte Jackson, CB, LSU

3 (85) - Rashaan Gaulden, CB/S, Tennessee

4 (101) - Ian Thomas, TE, Indiana

4 (136) - Marquis Haynes, DE, Ole Miss

5 (161) - Jermaine Carter, LB, Maryland

7 (234) - Andre Smith, LB, North Carolina

7 (242) - Kendrick Norton, DT, Miami

Moore, who gives off Steve Smith vibes, was my No. 14 rated player and will do immediate damage for the Carolina offense. It is tough for receivers to win rookie of the year honors, but the Maryland product has a chance. While undisciplined in areas, Jackson has elite speed and the athleticism to build upon. Gaulden was one of my favorite players in the draft, projecting best as a nickel defender with his play speed and toughness. Although he likely requires a redshirt season, Thomas goes to an ideal situation where he can learn and develop behind Greg Olsen. He will be viewed as a steal when we look back at this draft in three years. Haynes might only see the field in sub-packages, but his pass-rush skills will impact the game. Smith is a physical thumper and a good player to groom behind the scenes.

People are freaking out about 5th and 7th round picks which admittedly make very little sense but in the grand scheme of things don’t really matter.  Hurney did very well with Moore, Jackson and Thomas and I even think Haynes can be an impact pass rush specialist. Those are the picks that really matter. Don’t like the Gaulden pick but I’m willing to give him a chance. Seems to have the right mindset from what I’ve heard from his interviews post draft.

I liked the draft myself, would give it a solid B+.

Moore is going to flourish in Norvs system and steps on the field game 1 as the Panthers #1 WR. Has a chip on his shoulder and is hard to bring down once he has the ball.

Jackson will see the field a ton and has a shot at the starting outside CB spot, fast and also plays with a chip on his shoulder with attitude.

Gaulden will likely end up being the starting FS at some point in the season if not from game 1. Should see the field a ton and excels in the box, excellent tackler and a good blitzer.

Thomas has all the tools to start in the NFL and will be a much better pro then college player as his skill set fits the pros more then college. Expect him to win the #2 TE spot and be featured a bunch, similar to how Dickson was used.

Haynes will see the field in sub packages and make an impact, year one. wont ever be a starter likely but can still make a major impact.

Carter and Smith bring depth to the LB spot and can excel as special teams players.

Norton will need some time to groom but will likely be ready to be a primary back up or starter in a year or two.

in three years, it's very likely that Rivera and Hurney come out of this draft with 3-4 starters. That's always an excellent draft.

Some of us knew they'd draft well. Some of us knew it'd be WR,DB,DB. These rookies will help especially DJ. Some of us know just how important YAC are for NFL receivers because everyone is fast. I'm satisfied for now. Can't wait to see what the rooks can do

Several analysts have given us an A. The lowest I've seen is a C. This indicates to me that, like always, the draftniks here take things a little too far with their sub-amateurish proclamations.

I've heard and read in particular that some considered Jackson and Gaulden as the best defensive players on their respective teams.

Be wise enough to at least have an open mind. At the very least, if you're going to be hypercritical, stick to scrutinizing one position group (like me).

Look I think the draft is good for a Hurney draft.

At least he didn't go crazy for need in early rounds for linebacker. Those guys could blossom into something. I like that he got pressure guys like Marquis Haynes who can come in on sub packages on on 3rd down like a Bruce Irvin did for Seattle.

Right now there are still trades/cuts and free agents that could be picked up.

Hurney has did a c+/B- job so far imo. But all that could change when the offseason is over. Some things still can happen.

Panthers: On paper, if this is GM Marty Hurney's final draft with the Panthers, it has a chance to be his best. Hurney didn't have a first-round pick and he tried to trade up with the Rams in order to select Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen, but got him anyway with the 48th overall pick in the second round. Clausen should give Matt Moore a run for his money sometime this season as the starter. With Carolina's great running game, Clausen has excellent deep-ball accuracy. Remember, the Panthers traded away their first-round pick last year to San Francisco in order to draft Everette Brown, who had 15 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks last season. To help Moore and Claussen, the Panthers got two potential playmakers in Armanti Edwards and Brandon LaFell. Edwards was the quarterback at Appalachian State where he won two national titles, but he projects as a receiver and maybe even a wildcat quarterback. LaFell had a rough senior season at LSU and ran a poor 4.62 at the Combine, but he finished with 175 receptions for 25 TDs. The only bad thing was that Hurney traded away next year's second-round pick to the Patriots to get this done. OLB Eric Norwood was also good value in the fourth round. Cincinnati QB Tony Pike was an interesting pick. Grade: A+
