Bringing in a veteran QB as a backup

Seems to be a general consensus on this board that the Panthers will either bring in a veteran QB as a backup to Cam, or bring back Derek Anderson. They have a few young guys on the roster, including one that has spent time under Norv Turner in Taylor Heinicke.  But it seems like bringing in a veteran makes sense, right?

Here is couple QB's that have played under Norv Turner, but haven't been active since 2016.

Shaun Hill: 38 years old, career backup. Spent time playing under Norv in 2006 in San Francisco, and again from 2015-2016 in Minnesota. Hasn't played since 2016 and appears to be retired, but might be a good veteran mentor for the younger QB's and help Cam learn the offense quicker. Might be able to win you one game and step in for a few throws, but if he's on the field for any extended period of time it's likely the season is already over.

Charlie Whitehurst: 35 years old, another career backup. Nicknamed "Clipboard Jesus" according to Wikipedia. Played under Norv Turner during two different stints in San Diego, from 2007-2009, and again in 2012. Like Hill he hasn't played since 2016 and might be retired, although he never officially announced it.

Here are some veteran QB's that haven't worked under Turner, but were on an active roster in 2017 and are currently free agents.

Matt Moore: 33 years old, former Panther from 2007-2010, backup in Miami for the last 7 seasons. Started a playoff game in 2016. Hasn't re-signed with Miami yet. He could be a nice signing if he's interested in coming back and Anderson doesn't work out.

TJ Yates: 30 years old, former Tar Heel with NC connections. Bounced around the league as a backup since 2011, but has mostly made a name for himself as a backup QB for the Texans. Still not too old at 30 and has quality starting experience, including in the playoffs.

Kellen Clemens: 34 year old career backup. Bounced around the league, most recently with the Chargers. Did not overlap with Norv's time in San Diego. Probably not a better option than some of the young guys already on the roster.

Ryan Mallett: 29 years old. Most recently the backup in Baltimore for the past 2 seasons. Started against the Panthers in 2015 and played mediocre in that game, throwing a late game interception that sealed the game. Certainly done in Baltimore after they drafted Lamar Jackson in the 1st round. Not a better option than the younger QB's already on the roster.

Scott Tolzien: 30 years old. Spent time as a backup in Green Bay and Indianapolis. Notably started for an injured Aaron Rodgers in 2013, and started the season for the Colts in 2017 with Andrew Luck out. He was so bad in Indianapolis, the Colts were forced to trade for Jacoby Brissett. Another horrible option at backup QB.

Overall, looking at what veteran QB's are currently available, the best options are bringing back Derek Anderson or just rolling with the young QB's already on the roster.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
