Expect a big year from Funchess this year.

Funchess will be playing for a big contract. We know most WR's ball out in their contract year. I expect a motivated Devin Funchess this year, many people say he doesn't have #1 WR potential, I disagree. He has it in him as we saw last year in a short period of games. I think people forget he got banged up with the shoulder injury towards the end of the year, and maybe that's why his production fell off. A healthy Funchess has the potential to be a top 15 WR in the NFL this year.

Meh I think the last 2 years were also slated to be his 'big year' but really hasn't flashed yet.

Hasn't flashed? He has flashed each and every season. I suspect he is a Moose type receiver for us, which with DJ Moore and Torrey Smith will be invaluable.

He flashed last year after we traded Benji before he banged up his shoulder later in the year. I thought last year he showed us flashes. A top 15 WR stat wise is not out of the question for Funchess this year imo.

Did LaFell ball out in his contract year, or did he do a disappearing act when Smitty got hurt? I forget...

LaFell didn't have the talent or potential Funchess has. 2 totally different situations.

I was honestly impressed how he was able to perform in that playoff game against the saints with basically one arm. He even managed to make some catches over marshon covering him. I am looking forward to see what he does in a contract year as a number one receiver. That endzone play he let get away are the types plays i expect him to start making now.

So which is it?  Do all WR"s "ball out in their contract year" or just the ones with "potential."

I'm Cautiously optimistic for him this year. I think he has the potential to do really well this year. He's still only 23 and only going to turn 24 later this month. He's so young and still has so much football left, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does and hope he balls out so we have a legitimate receiving corp with him and Moore going forward.

Wasn’t comparing the two. You have since edited your post but my post was in response to you saying all WRs ball out in their contract year. I like Funch and hope he can take that next step forward but there are a lot of mouths to feed now and he didn’t step forward like we hoped for last year. He was solid yes, especially playing through the injury, but he didn’t meet hopes or expectations as a #1 WR.

I love your optimism, and hope that you're right! I really do think Fun Fun will have a good year, maybe even get his first 1000 yard / 10 TD season. Would that make him a top 15 WR? 1000/10 would be a nice step up and a lofty goal with all the new receivers and Greg back.

I can't imagine how tough it is for a GM when they come across this situation. You have a player who has the potential and is trending to be a star but during the last year of their contract.

You have to take a gamble:

A. Offer an extension now for team friendly rate (Hope they reach the potential of the contract)

B. Wait until their contract is up and offer an extension, with the chances of them being a big deal breakout. (and spend a poo load of money on one player)

Either way has to be tough. You could end up with a mediocre player with a long term deal, or lose a great player because they were too expensive.

    • Thin sliced roast beef, provolone, and roasted bell peppers on a toasted sub roll.  At least one thing is going right today. I don't trust anyone who's never put Bugles on their fingertips to make witch fingers.
    • But yeh,  Bryce is the only problem on this sorry excuse of a team. You could put Tom Brady on this team and we would still suck . Worst part is Tepper and his various band of clowns have been trying to build a competitive team for 7 freaking years and are no closer now than when it all started.
    • Regardless of the trade and where he was picked, Bryce actively created deception. He wore a hoodie to the combine and was 15 lbs heavier because he packed on water weight because he didnt weigh near 200 lbs. He didn't participate in drills in a wide open 4 way, really 3, QB bid. Then there was all this hype over the S2 test that he had been practicing that we've never heard about in the draft process since. Does anyone think it was an accident Stroud's score on the S2 was released? Stroud said forget the score, watch his tape. Wonder why. There was a whole bunch of shady poo going on surrounding Bryce pre draft, and I for one, find it all a little too convenient.  Just my opinion, but he was a used car salesman that used some armor all and a wash n wax and maybe a set of white walls then schmoozed his way at dinner with Dave and Nicole and sold them that he was a super savant.  There was a whole lot of BS swirling around the BY hype train and he was a full fledged participant. Frank didn't want Bryce, he wanted Stroud. A new head coach does not pick a QB he has to go design a brand new offense around unless that guy is a generationaltalent, which Bryce was most definitely not. He picks the guy that best fits what he does and that was Stroud. This was Dave and Nicole's pick and they fuged this team like they've done over and over again since they've been here. They fell for use car salesman Rhule, then used car salesman Bryce and company. And the fans got stuck with the 4 years of payments on a car less reliable than Al Bundy's Dodge.
