We've got 5.8 mil in cap space if OTC is correct, and could easily clear a few more if needed.

Not to mention, the cap is a myth and can be manipulated all to hell. We're going to have to replace a lot of guys, but give Iloka a contract with bigger money next year when 5-6 older guys and decent chunks of change come off our books.

Yeah 5.8 without roster cuts.

Is he that much better than what we have?  If so what are you basing it on?  Or is this another case where the "other guy has to be better"?

He's quality starting safety cut solely for cost savings measures by a team with a notoriously cheapskate owner. Yes, he's absolutely better than what we currently have.

This!

The dude was a quality starter on a above avg secondary in this league.

We have a old man who has lost more than a few steps, and a few cast offs from other teams who had poor secondaries.

Iloka has been outspoken about player protests, but we also have Torrey, who hasn't been silenced in the media by Tepper.  Under JR, Iloka doesn't happen...with Tepper, who knows.

Our current safeties though - -

  • Old man Mike Adams maybe in his last year?
  • Searcy who is average at best and just concussed himself
  • Colin Jones - Rivera's special team love child who is basically Rudy
  • Gaulden - A rookie, switching back to safety, who hasn't stood out that much.

Basically, does Iloka > Colin Jones to you, for now and the future when all of the guys listed above are gone or unknowns.. If yes, you pursue him.

Just more fuel to the fire to set myself up for disappointment.  Our two weak links on this team, OT and Secondary.  Are we going to fix OT with cuts?  Nope.  Can we help fix the secondary?  You're damn right we can.

Our next starting safety for the next 5 years who is proven and not too expensive sounds like a nice start.

Too bad theres all that owner collusion that will prevent anyone from signing him, right Tre Boston?

Boston just had a very different opinion of his value than the 32 NFL GMs had. When he finally signed a contract for his market value he wanted to cast blame elsewhere. He thought his stats would get him more money. Splash plays have always been a strength of his and those show up on the stat sheet. What doesn't are all the blown coverages and horrible angles taken leading to big plays for the other team.
