NFL's new "putting your weight on the QB while sacking him is a personal foul" rule

How exactly do they expect these big DL guys to not "put their weight" on a guy when they tackle him.

The league at least seems to realize that the helmet rule is a Mongolian cluster $%#@, but they're still trying to salvage it.  Wonder how it'll go with this dumbass rule.

This rule actually makes sense. The league simply doesn’t want defensive players excessively driving QBs into the ground. If you watch the penalty called in Minnesota against Jacksonville, you can see, just before the players hit the ground, how the defensive player pushes off the ground with his legs to further drive th QB into the ground. That is an intentional move and one the League is trying to get rid of. I don’t have an issue with that.

I know we all grew up in a different era. LT, Ronnie Lott, and the other really big hitters. However, knowing what we know now about how these guys’ lives are affected after the game, I have no issue with making it just a little safer, especially when the issue concerns something that has no effect on the game. If the Minnesota player had not pushed off the ground, it would have been a sack. No need to drive the guy into the ground like that in this day and age.

But how do you determine a guy simply falling down as he makes a tackle vs a guy "driving his opponent into the ground"?

Referee judgment call?

Yeah, I'm not signing up for that, not even with a gun to my head.

That is what refs are paid to do. I think you can clearly tell by the way someone’s body reacts whether it was a fall or intentional. Go back to the MINN-JAX game. That was not an accident.

To fix your issue though, this penalty should be reviewable, much like targeting.

And over the past several years, they've done it in increasingly poor fashion. The NFL's response has been to take no real action other than to try harder and harder to spin the notion that the refs are doing great.

Beyond that though, the Chiefs defender who spoke out is right.  The NFL is making it increasingly hard to tackle anyone at all. Maybe they think that's good for the game, but I strongly disagree.

How about you throw flags on the fugging HEAD HUNTERS, National Football League, before you worry about "putting your weight on the QB" to throw a goddam flag?

The blatantly illegal but uncalled hits Cam took in that game will never ceases to piss me off. You'll never convince me that the Broncos weren't intentionally targeting him Saints bountygate style. The above hit is a perfect example. That was an intentional spearing to the head.

Because if you watch the play, you can see the tackler drive his shoulder into the QB on the way down. Basically the same as the "defenseless receiver" rule.
