Any Chance Texans Would Trade Clowney?

If we were to trade a 1st for anyone I would go after Patrick Peterson. Arizona clearly in for a log rebuild, will be winless before the trade deadline, Peterson is an older player now, cap hit would be 1.2 million for Arizona to trade him, and it just would make a lot of sense.

That's my point. Everything about Clowney is almost entirely based on hype and potential, but what has he actually DONE? Four years after being picked #1 overall, he has 20 total sacks. Everyone remembers all the hype and that one time when he hit a Michigan RB really hard but his NFL career has been underwhelming at best. Hell, even going all the way back to college he only has one double digit sack season after graduating high school. Yes, injuries have played a big role in that bit but last year when he was healthy he racked up 40 tackles and 9.5 sacks. Not bad, but not all that good for a former #1 overall pick in his 4th season either. Addison had 44 tackles and 11 sacks last season.

The Texans fell into the hype/potential trap with Clowney and took him #1 despite his underwhelming 8 sacks in his final season at South Carolina and some pass rush desperate team is probably going to ignore his injury history and subpar performance and pay him way more than they should bwecause he's 6'6" 270 pounds and a freak of an athlete.

You can’t compare his stats to Addison.  They pretty much play 2 different positions.  Clowney in our defense, playing with his hands down every snap in a traditional 4-3 defense would blow Addison’s stats out the water.  Unfortunately for him, the Texans have played him as a 3-4 OLB much of his career.  Guy is still a pro bowler and better than most players but he could be great in a system like ours.

did he finish 5th in the heisman voting his sophomore year based on hype?  Make a pro bowl based on hype?

Yep. The biggest reasons that most considered the Chargers huge winners in that trade early on wasn't so much Rivers > Eli, it was that Rivers + Shawne Merriman + Nate Kaeding + Roman Oben >>>>> Eli Manning. The Chargers killed it with every asset they picked up in that trade. They got a very good QB in Rivers, a very good kicker in Kaeding, a dominant lass rusher in Merriman, and a starting LT in Oben. They were a MUCH better overall team than the Giants for awhile. But, now the Giants have two rings to show for it all and the Chargers have a bunch of disappointing seasons where they had a good shot at a SB run and went home early.

Gotta be honest here though, the AFC was much tougher to get out of back then than the NFC was...now, it's the exact opposite.

You had Manning and Brady doing their thing back then, as well as the Steelers, and them being one of the best run franchises in the NFL since the start.  Add in a very good defensive minded Ravens team.

Now the AFC is much weakened, and NFC has taken over, but it wasn't always that way.

Really good class of DE for 2019 free agency:

Jadeveon Clowney

Ziggy Ansah

Demarcus Lawrence

Dante Fowler

Frank Clark

Brandon Graham

Might be able to snag Fowler for cheap. The league for the most part knows Clowney is out of position. Lawrence would be a dream but he is going to cost more than probably any of them.

    • Some people have been beaten down so long they have no standards. Can't be reasoned with.
    • Getting better, might be fairly charitable. We finished 1-3 with the pressure on. That is for sure not trending up.  I don’t see a clear run of performances that prove he has taken it to another level. Not yet.  I would say he played really well in the WC game. And folded on that last series where we still had a chance. I think he threw one good ball. That last series is the kind of thing a player is supposed to learn from and not repeat. We have to see him do it before we can credit him for doing it.    I would also say he has not done enough of playing at his ceiling and what we should expect as the game in game out norm is still not established.  We gonna get MNF in SF or we gonna get the WC game? Seattle or Atlanta yardage record?   Besides that he has three years of horrendous play to start the season hanging over him. Are we going to get that again or will he be over that? We can’t know that. Mind you, that isn‘t two of three it is three of three he has yet to play well to start the year as a pro. Ofer.    So, many questions remain.    As far as weapons and help… said it before. Fix the OL so we can protect him.  It is time for a 1.1 pick in his 4th season, third year in the same offense, to elevate the players we have given him. You can’t keep up the level of investment dedicated to propping him up, you have to prop up the defense too and get some balance.
    • Yeah, just got back to the house from doing some actual work, hopefully they create some better chances in the second half. 3-1 looks tough for you
