If Shaq is gone 2019, LB in draft or FA

I believe they could offer a contract to TD, with the understanding that his playing time will likely be reduced.

As far as draft vs. free agency, it really depends on what is out there and how much it costs. My priority would be draft first, but not in the first round - that belongs to a pass-rushing DE.

I bring TD back, let shaq walk, and draft a LB, personally.  I dont think he is worth his fifth year option cost and not a long term answer

You say that, but Shaq has barely had the opportunity to show what he can do in his true position (where TD plays).  The first 4 games of the year, Shaq played very well in TD's role, and I think we absolutely should keep him

Here is my thoughts on Shaq

He needs to be extended

He needs to be a part of this team going forward

Look, you can't afford to have superstars at every position.  When you have someone solid who isnt going to break the bank you keep him.

Shaq's biggest problem is TD and being under his Shadow.  People always argue, there isnt that big a difference between SLB and WLB.

But when Shaq has slid over to TDs role when he's been suspended/injured etc.  Several will argue that he was better than Luke vs Dallas.

We had hoped, with his versatility that he could be a LB that could stay in on Nickel D (NFL you see more and more Nickel D with offenses going more and more spread out). But Shaq just cant.  Few to none even can.  How many OLBs out there do you see can matchup on a Ryan Switzer, Sanu, etc.  You let him play more up, blitz, etc like TD.  He has been a stud

Heck TD, a safety hybrid as well.  Despite injuries.  He didnt even start to take off until Beason left.  Shaq has been groomed under TD, and have the same play mentality who love to come through line and hit someone

He is due 9 mil next year.  Which needs to be brought down. Extending him a few years will do that.

Cutting him, and you now have another hole to fix ontop of the many you already have

Sure he's been a disappointment and there's no way we should pay the 9 million picking up his 5th year would cost, however if we can keep him around at a reasonable cap number we should attempt to do so. He's been on the field as a contributing member  of some very good defenses, even while playing somewhat out of position, and its not like we don't have more pressing needs elsewhere in the draft and free agency.

    • And that makes you right.
    • Mel Kiper said he would retire if Jimmy Clausen wasn't a successful NFL starter too. Just because the experts make a claim doesnt mean it's true either.  Bryce may be a serviceable QB for someone. Serviceable QBs don't bring you a perennial winner or lead you to the playoffs over and over. Serviceable QBs also dont get 50m plus per year deals which is what a Bryce extension would look like.  The stats show he hasn't been even a serviceable QB in the 3 years he's been here. The eye test shows he hasn't put together 2 franchise QB salary games back to back in 3 years.  Complain all you want about people being negative, but people pointing out that Bryce is held to a different standard than anyone else on the team isn't complaining. It's stating the obvious.
    • We have big bodied WRs and 3 TEs who all have potential and each bring something different to the table. I never saw the need to go out there and try and find a new starting TE.  While it's nice to have a guy like McBride, Bowers, etc, I think a team's better use of the cap is by having TEs on rookie contracts or cheap vets, not having to pay elite TE money.
