But honestly, I'd rather let Shaq and his $10M cap hit walk and give TD another year. TD has lost a step, but he's still a better LB than Shaq and Shaq isn't worth anywhere near his next year's cap hit.

Bingo.   Davis still has a bit of value as a situational player, but his intelligence more than makes up for his loss of speed.  Thompson was never a good draft pick, IMO, and he played as well as I thought he would.  He is worth 2 million--and he is set to earn 4x that amount.

I love TD but it's time to move on. It's not just about how he is right now but how he will be week 11 next season. He's taken a small step back each of the last couple of years, another step will not be good. The Patriots have been good for so long largely because (at least until this year with Brady and Gronk) they have gotten rid of players a year early rather than a year late.

You gotta look at the whole picture, while Luke is an absolute animal on Defense, TD is an integral part of why Luke is so good.

Davis was on absolute fire on Monday night, and he's been decent all year after his suspension.  I believe if he was put in the right place (like most of the defense should have been) on play calls, we would have seen him do well throughout the year.

As others said, we have bigger needs in the draft, rather bandage that LB core with TD for another year as he is still effective, and his leadership on Defense is quite important as well.

So, all you stat guys just ignore those stats when it doesn't fit your narrative or when it come time for a new contract?

PFF ranks TD as the #11 LB at his position this season. Unless you have someone in mind who is better and will cost less (both of those prerequisites are highly unlikely), the there's no reason to do anything beyond a simple 2-year deal for TD at market price. It's what he would expect at his age and tenure and it's fair to both parties.

Regardless of age, as long as he's playing at a high level, why fug with it?

Well that may be when the Tepper honeymoon  phase ends.  TD stayed healthy and was one of the better players on our defense yet again.  He's not in obvious decline, and he's the emotional heartbeat of the D.  Gotta keep him.  Give hime a 2 year 6 million dollar contract and lets roll.

Tons of legendary players end up finishing their careers elsewhere than where they made their mark. It may happen with TD. This. But at the same time I will not think anything less of Davis if he goes somewhere else to finish his career.  Dude is always a Panther imO.

Go get as much money as you can. If someone is willing to pay TD then he deserves the contract that he gets.  No ill will.
