Fowler: Yes, trade for Antonio Brown

Quote

If the Carolina Panthers don’t try hard to trade for Antonio Brown this offseason, they are making a big mistake.

I get that it would cause a salary-cap problem. I understand the Panthers are already heavily invested in their young receivers. I know Brown will turn 31 before the 2019 season.

But Brown is the sort of game-changer who is worth every off-field drama he would star in and every penny he would make.

Let me put it this way: Would you add an “in-his-prime” version of Steve Smith to the Panthers roster right now if you could?

Because that’s what Brown is – an undersized but dominant player who has caught 100-plus passes for six straight years. The fact that he and Cam Newton are already workout buddies is a nice bonus.

Yes, it would be costly. I would imagine Pittsburgh will ultimately obtain both a first-round draft pick and something else very good for Brown.

That’s OK. He’s worth it. Did you see the way Dallas’s offense transformed when they traded a first-round draft pick to Oakland for wide receiver Amari Cooper in midseason?

I’d glad give the Steelers the Panthers’ first-round pick in 2019 (No. 16 overall) for Brown. If that weren’t enough, I’d add another mid-round draft pick or any player on the roster outside of Carolina’s top five players.

Take Luke Kuechly, Christian McCaffrey, Newton, Trai Turner and DJ Moore off the table. Everyone else is fair game.

MLJ: Only if you're playing Madden

Quote

The idea of Antonio Brown playing for the Panthers is fun for your Madden franchise but realistically, that’s all it’ll ever be. So despite at least one national sports writer urging Carolina to trade for Brown, pump the brakes on your custom jersey order.

Let’s first break down why Brown — one of the best wide receivers ever — is even being discussed as a trade target: His on-field production couldn’t mute his diva behavior.

While Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger deserves his share of the blame for how the reported spat between the two was handled, only one player refused to play in a must-win regular season finale and left the stadium at halftime because of it — Brown.

That could be an isolated incident but his former teammate, ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, called Brown a “monster” ever since signing his first big contract. I’ve only been around the Panthers’ locker room for a few months, but the only receiver who’s even remotely displayed these qualities is likely on his way out of town. If Carolina were to bring in a player essentially exiled from the only team he’s ever known, it’d contradict everything this front office has done over the past several years to build its strong locker room.

Speaking of the Panthers’ front office, which has holes to fill at safety, cornerback, linebacker, defensive line, offensive line, running back and (possibly) quarterback, in no particular order — how much of the Panthers’ projected $25 million of cap space are they willing to spend on one player? Brown’s base salary alone for the 2019 season is a little more than $12 million. Can the Panthers afford to pay Brown and still address their other needs?

Wait, is that his direct quote? Wish he was the GM of one of the teams I hate. Even with the roster, we have a QB who can't throw more than ten yards and a questionable situation. He's a locker room cancer. Fowler clearly loses this battle you've created, the other guy wins. Fowler should be fired.

Drugs are a real problem these days— both prescription and illegal,..

hey guys,.. take your 1st rounder and your 20 million in cap space and spend it all on Antonio Brown.

then he will bitch cry whine when he either can’t have a ball thrown to him, or he gets 15 spot passes and reverses trying to outrun the 1 second sack times.

if we do nothing for our offensive line,... I would not blame cam for sitting for a year and demanding trade.

i bet Dallas would dump Dak for Cam in a heart beat.

I love some Antonio Brown,.. and if we had 2 first round picks and $100 million to spend like some teams do— Colts— then absolutely.

but what,. We bring in Antonio, player 38, have a negative cap to sign 6 draft picks who are supposed to make up for what we don’t have and then sign all the rest league minimum max scrubs?

yuck

i'd guess antonio knows more about cams shoulder than just about anyone seeing as how close they are.  if cam can throw deep we would have the best o in the league with him.   if he can't, no use.  also it would be a win now move and i don't know if we're ready this year for a run.

Cam won't have time to throw it to Brown when he is getting sacked behind a line put together with JAGs and Practice squad specials, since we used all of the money to bring over Brown.  Oh and we'll always be playing from behind since we'll have no pash rush either since we will be giving up draft picks for him as well.

No.  DJ Moore and Samuel for the future please.

Yea this team is in a familiar spot with Hurney at the helm.
No cap space and dozens of holes to fill....ahh the bad ole days....how we didn't miss ye.

In all fairness, this particular cap mess is largely on Gettleman.  The top 5 contracts on the team for instance are all Gettleman contracts - and eight out of the top 10.

Are they referring to Funchess?  I know he had some issues with drops, but I never heard anything about him being a Diva.
