On Monday, it was reported that the Carolina Panthers had released linebacker Ben Jacobs, a critical member of their special teams unit. But as it turns out, Jacobs isn't leaving the team. Rather, he is simply entering the next phase of his football career.

According to a report by Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers are hiring Jacobs as their new assistant special teams coach. Jacobs replace Heath Farwell, who left the Panthers in the offseason to become the special teams coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. Jacobs will now work under special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, who played alongside Jacobs from 2013 to 2014.

So two of Rivera's former players are now coaching our special teams.

I think Blackburn has actually done pretty well as a special teams coach so far. Waiting to see how Jacobs does.

Some teams have at least one special teams coach with expertise in the kicking department. Don't know that either of these guys fits that bill. Heck, we may not have had anybody like that since Bruce DeHaven.

It's another reason I just don't believe in Ron.  There are a countless number of players that he keeps in the fold who wouldn't even sniff a practice squad spot on another team, and yet, they play here.  Jacobs knew Rivera was and is the only guy who would have him on his active roster...  and because Ron had to release him, he couldn't let him walk away without a consolation prize...  just likes guys like Bersin, Richard Rodgers, and Eric Washington.  Ron can't ever just make a football-based decision.

Boy, everyone is surly today. Why knock the hiring of a former 7 year, 30 year old player who is highly respected with his ST play as a ST coach? We don't know why he retired. Maybe he feels 7 years of football is enough and wants stable employment with less violence doing something he will enjoy.

Most coaches were not great players. If fact many great players make middling to.poor coaches.  Jacobs was a special teams ace who was a decent backup for depth. Every team has those guys.  You can't have all stars at every position, you have average guys who work cheaper.

He brought him on because by all accounts he did a great job on special teams and understands our system. He was exactly what we needed as an assistant.

This is the best place he could've ended up with this organization. 

He was taking up a roster spot and cap space, while mainly offering penalties and frustratioin for me the past couple of seasons with his style of play/discipline.

Now....helping lend his fire and expertise to the players - that I'm good with. It's not like we named him DC or anything.

      100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
