Jourdan Rodrigue does not believe we are getting rid of Tory Smith

One would assume it would be an easy way to free up 5 million for a cap strapped team, however we do need insurance/vet leader in case DJ or Samuel goes down. We will have to see the contracts coming up in free agency to see if that’s a good decision or not. Thoughts?

Another coach who gets paid as a player that is an underperformer at their job. Not really surprising given that our HC is doing the D coordinators job and the D coordinator is doing the D line coaches job. 190 yards and 2 TDs for $ 5 million? Hopefully just another 'smokescreen', it's just hard to tell with this bunch.

Carrying Torrey Smith at a $5M cap hit when all $5M of that could be cleared at the stroke of a pen would be beyond idiotic. I'm okay with bringing him back as depth, but it would have to be at a figure substantially less than $5M. We hold all the leverage here. He has $0 guaranteed in that contract and he wouldn't get anywhere close to $5M on the open market. I'm talking about bringing him and his agent in and working out something a lot closer to veteran minimum than $5M or thanking him for his services and wishing him the best of luck.

Not smart for a team with a lot of holes and little cap space.  Not surprising though.

Time will tell. It’s just her opinion, but it will be interesting to see what type of contracts are thrown out in free agency this year, even for players with production like a Tory Smith. No doubt DJ, Samuel and Wright need to be wr1, WR2, and WR3 but if one goes out for multiple weeks we have to get someone who can perform. I’m sure the team would prefer a vet to fill that role, and free agency soon will tell if that’s a good move or not. I can’t imagine how much cash Funch will get in a few days compared to his talent/maturity level.

Get rid of TD,  but keep Torrey? Wow

Absolutely this. Not only was TD a cornerstone of the franchise, but he's still a much better football player than Torrey Smith. AND we could've likely gotten him back for less than Torrey is scheduled to make.

I absolutely have to stop caring about what this franchise does.

Shouldn't have traded for him last year, but we did....then we carried him on the roster...which we shouldn't have...but we did...now we are likely carrying him again with zero dead money...at that price?

Simply stunning.

Do you trade one hole for another? Are we 100% set on WR and can afford to let go a known leader?

Paying 5 mil for a backup WR isn't smart.  I get the leadership role and the coaching staff has shown a liking to having that one vet in the room so I know why they'd do it but you have Jarius Wright for that already or find a cheaper option there (even if its cutting and resigning Smith at a lower rate).

That should have been done before last season when we had the same leverage.

    • Ya'll.....look at Stafford without his feet set. This is why people in here talk about Bryce not having elite abilities mattering when plays break down. He cannot make these kind of throws with his base not being set.
    • Pretty much going to play each other the same way.  Stop the run let the bad QB try to win the game. It will come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes.
    • From the Charlotte Observer   1. quarterback Bryce Young has yet to earn a road win this season, and the third-year former overall No. 1 pick is 1-15 on the road as a starter for his career — which is tied for the worst record over 16 games in NFL history. 2. The Jets, meanwhile, haven’t won a game yet. But even still it’s tough to pinpoint their identity. 3. They’ve lost four of their six games by a single score — three games by two points, specifically.  4. Quarterback Justin Fields has flashed his propensity for playmaking at times this year — with the exception of his Week 6 performance where he only threw for 45 yards passing — and Breece Hall is a undeniably good lead running back having a solid year statistically.   5. The Jets’ team rankings aren’t too ugly either.     Their defense, specifically. That unit is ninth in third-down conversion rate (36.4%) and 10th in opponent passing yards per game (200.5).   Their Achilles heel to date, it appears, is their turnover margin (-1.2, 31st in the NFL).
