Give Hurney some credit

You really think someone was gonna make Torrey Smith a big offer after his performance last year?

He missed half of the season. He was coming along before the injury.

A team would have offered him 4-5 million. Maybe more.

When Cole Beasley is making $29M over 4 years and Devin Funchess is making $13M for one year, Torrey Smith at $5M doesn't seem so bad at all...

When Collins gets 6 years $85M, Amos gets 4 years $37M, Mathieu gets 3 years $42M, Eric Reid at 3 years $22M is a damn steal.

Great pre-free agency moves from Hurney and smart to not get in on the insane early spending, of which pretty much all these deals will be huge overpays by bad teams. Yet to see about D. Williams but definitely looks smart to let him test the market and let it play out. We may still be able to re-sign him if he isn't getting the offers he expected (which may be the case since he hasn't signed yet). Still a long way to go for Hurney to gain any trust from fans as GM but he's started off this offseason significantly better than many of his unsuccessful seasons in his first stint here.

You're also the one that emphatically said it would be "retarded" to trade Funchess.

if we didn’t have so many holes then drafting a Campbell, Brown or a Ridley in the second to be another option to be with Moore, Samuel and Wright would be on the table.

Torrey was really starting to put together some nice games with Cam before he got hurt so having him with the crew as a rotation with our first 3 is not bad for $5 million.

i mean, what can we upgrade for with the same money? Deals like Funchess and Brown our there say no one.

Guaranteed or not, I can't in any way endorse giving five million to a guy who's realistically your sixth or seventh receiving option; especially not when you could have cut him and re-signed for less.

As to Reid, someone else pointed out that it's hard to compare his contract to the ones being signed now because those are going to the top guys on the market. The contracts that get signed by guys after the early feeding frenzy calms down will be the better comparison.

I do agree with not being involved in the early insanity, but let's be real. With our cap space, it's not like that was an option.

If we do keep him and he stays healthy (and we have a QB with a healthy enough arm to throw deep) he'll be a top 5 option without a doubt, possibly 4th. He and Wright are both just role players, but important ones.

I'd compare Reid's play to Amos and he got nearly nearly 33% more per year than Reid. And Collins is getting nearly twice as much. Collins is absolutely better but he does not have an impact nearly twice that of Reid, maybe at most 1.5x. That's a bargain.

Well, Hurney did show in the past that he could clear up cap space for the short term while hurting us in the long run, and plenty of GMs on other teams do that every year. Cap space can easily be created through several different moves that help you a little at the time and hurt a lot more in the long run. Hurney hasn't done any of that, and it absolutely was an option.

For someone that far behind in the receiving pecking order (Moore, Samuel, Wright, Olsen, CMC are ahead), it is atrocious for $5 million. The sixth-best receiving target hardly gets playing time and even less targets.

Compare Smith and Beasley's stats... then look at Beasley's contract.
