Any off the couch OT is going to be awful. Unfortunately, we gave a guy who is off the couch awful a $50M+ contract.

My take on Kalil has long been that we took a gamble on him being healthy but he never was.

I'll always wonder if we would have done the deal without Ryan on the team and Jerry Richardson saying "spend money".

But ya know, "ifs and buts"...

If you aren't using that cap room this year, you can roll ot over and have it largely negative his dead money next year. We can move on right now if we want to do it and we absolutely should.

Fair point.

It really is a lose lose situation.

I think a lot of us are forgetting or downplaying this fact. Smith and Kalil are tying up over 12M that could be used next year - and we may need it to sign Daryl Williams long term.

Smith's contract isnt guaranteed tomorrow. That decision can be made later and it doesn't make a difference

this is my take - if we do not plan on making any other moves than it is better to keep him.

cuttin him (post june 1) saves us 7.25 mil, but cost us 9.8 next year. if we arent spending that 7.25 this year, pay him

if we cut him next year (post june 1) saves us 11 mil next year and only cost is 4.9 the following.

if he is on the roster it doesn't mean he has to start. he is good DEPTH. need depth on the oline. yes i dont like paying someone that kind of money for depth, but keeping him this year is better for us next year, especially if we are done with big splashes in FA. he has no future on this team and we could still draft OL in the 1st round.

That's all well and good but I highly doubt, if he is on the roster and "healthy" he will be used as "depth." he will be a starter. Sometimes the right thing to do for everyone involved it to cut ties and move on. We can fill the roster spot with a better player instead of wasting a roster spot. And he will be allowed to seek a starting opportunity somewhere else

To me, a gamble on health looks something like Daryl William's one year $6M deal. We gave Kalil a TON of guaranteed money in that gamble. He didn't work out and here we are three years down the road still trying to navigate that mess. If Daryl doesn't work out, we've spent $6M this year with zero future cap repercussions. That's quite a bargain considering it looks like we're going to spend $5M on Torrey Smith.

Who the fug gambles with a contract like that??? That isn't gambling, that is just flushing money down the toilet. The fact is, health or not, he has been a terrible OT for every single season of his career outside his rookie year. It was an ATROCIOUS decision at the time and in hindsight, it looks even more atrocious.

At this point, I literally just want to see him jettisoned so I can try and forget he ever came here.

Also, we’ve only been clear of Oher’s dead money for a few months.

I’m not gonna take a dump on Dave all day here, because things happen. But this has miserable few years of deceased cash for one position.

    • All I heard was uber rides, weight trainers, and t shirts??? Maybe some meals too........ What a monster and he should be tossed in a rusty wood chipper!!!1!11!!!!!
    • This is from 5 months ago. It was one or the other. Trade for one or draft one. We apparently called the Jets about Wilson. We also talked to the Seahawks about Metcalf. Drafting our own guy was the best course of action given the required investment. Regardless now is the time for Bryce Young to produce. We are fourth amongst all teams in cap spending on the OL. Back to back first round picks at WR and multiple young TE draft picks now. Very solid and respectable backfield. New pieces across the defense. The time is now.
    • That was just the worst time to have their worst game of the season. One key deal was the broncos guess the Panthers would NOT change any plays or flow to the game. Another key point overlook that bronco defense was truly one of the best in the NFL history. It was the best defense the Panthers faced that year, by far. They were not ready for it, but broncos were ready for the Panthers. Mix in that bad luck, poor refs showcase, and this is the golden boys last game........ Panthers needed to win by 20 and the broncos defense was not going to allow that.  Panthers were the favorites and I believe they also thought that it was going to easier than them destroying NFC playoff teams as they marched to the SB. I've heard darin Gantt say the play calls were to give remmers help, but for some reason the team never did it. During the year they never had that problem, so maybe never practiced giving help via TE/RB, or WR chip. Cam was superman that year, no need for any adjustments...... Until you meet a legendary defense with studs at all levels, Think about it, Peyton was throwing wingless dunks for the whole season, the defense had to carry his corpse to the SB. That's how good they were, not many defense are able to get to the playoffs and win a SB without decent QB play. If you recall the beginning of that defense took Tim Teblows and his non-throwing arse to the playoffs couple years before. That's insane the level of defense needed to overcome.
