The Panthers went into free agency with needs at several positions -- tackle, center, safety and pass-rush -- and they were one of the few teams able to fill their needs with quality players without breaking the bank. The Panthers re-signed Eric Reid after watching him start 13 games for them last season. Carolina also filled a big hole at center by signing Matt Paradis away from the Broncos. The Panthers also got Daryl Williams and Bruce Irvin on low-risk one-year deals.

I have to say I don't have a problem. they've done really well aside from the torrey smith deal, which I guess they can still get out of and I hope they do because i'm not loving the idea of cam's fourth option getting that much money but whatever. hurney's done pretty well. some of the deals might come back to bite us in the butt down the road (more typical hurney structures), but I think it puts us in a good situation to win and I think the pressure to win this year is on in a big way.

it hasn't necessarily been good long term decisions in FA so far, but it helps us in the now. That's actually fine, though. build for the future through the draft. take care of more immediate needs in FA and if you can get them done on one year deals...good. that was one aspect that I liked from gettleman and i'm liking in hurney this time around.

Panthers sign DE/OLB Bruce Irvin (1 year, $4 million): A Grade 
The Panthers are moving to a 3-4, so they had to find some potent edge rushers to fit their scheme. Bruce Irvin has lots of experience in the 4-3, but when he was entering the NFL out of West Virginia, I believed that he would be a better fit in the 3-4. We'll finally get to see him in that formation in 2019. 

Irvin does everything well, but his best attribute is his pass-rushing ability. Despite his age (32 in November), Irvin continued to show off his quality edge-rushing skills late last year when he logged 3.5 sacks in the final four games with the Falcons. Irvin should be able to parlay that into a successful 2019 campaign. 

There is definitely some concern that Irvin will regress because of his age, but the Panthers aren't taking a risk with this 1-year "prove it" contract for only $4 million. They'll be getting Irvin's best effort, as he'll be trying to earn one last lucrative contract in his career.

On paper I’m happy.

What I want to see is free agency ratings based on after the fact. I wish all these grading media’s would put time into making those. Course, it’s take more effort.

Still, I wonder who would win these offseason Super Bowls based on results...after all it’s what matters.

You will be able to see that during the season. Right now it’s all anticipatory and estimation. Enjoy what you can while you can.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman claims he has a plan for this team, but I'll be honest, I'm not exactly sure what that plan is supposed to be. Not only did the Giants trade away their best offensive player in Odell Beckham, but they also dealt away one of their best pass rushers (Olivier Vernon) while also letting their best safety leave in free agency (Landon Collins). The only way Gettleman's plan is working is if his plan was to get rid of all his best players.

      I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
