NFL: Metcalf's phone call

Mr. Scot

If you watched the draft coverage over the last few days, you might have seen the clip of DK Metcalf getting his phone call from Pete Carroll.

After Caroll tells Metcalf they've drafted him, Metcalf tearfully asks "Why did you wait so long?"

I'm curious as to people's reaction to that. Obviously, he's a kid and he was emotional, but I've heard a few people say he sounded ungrateful by implying that they should have taken him sooner.

Mind you, there's also his showing up to meet his new coach shirtless (and Pete Carroll removing his own shirt, yikes) to talk about, but I'm primarily interested in people's opinion about the phone call.

He was riding high after the combine.  He figured he would go early---people really sing your praises etc.  He was expressing the agony of waiting--not that he was critical because Seattle was not the only team waiting so long....I think he was asking, "What was it that caused people to doubt me?"  or something more akin to that than being critical.

When he said, "Yes it does, yes it does," You better believe it does to him.  Another way of telling Carroll that he has something to prove.

Showing up without a shirt?  No clue.  It could have been a humorous reaction to a joke or comment.  If I had 3% body fat, I would not own a shirt.

I heard somewhere (I think it was Total Access) that the Seahawks staff asked DK to come to the meeting with Pete without his shirt as a joke bc Pete loves that kind of stuff...  and Pete rose to the occasion.  Abd after hearing that, you can kind of see those reactions play out, i.e. Pete being surprised and amused at DK walking in shirtless while several other Seahawks staffers sitting in the room were laughing, then Pete stands up and takes his shirt off.

This thing has been shoved down the throat of anyone who watches nfl network and I have no idea why. Now I get it on the panthers forum too. Fantastic.

Total non story. Emotional player wanted to be drafted higher. Cool. Everyone does. Don’t blame him at all for saying what he said

Seemed like he and Carrol really hit it off. I wanted no part of that guy in the 1st as I think there's a very good chance he's just a workout warrior, but having a guy with his raw talent on your roster with a massive chip on his shoulder thinking he has something to prove isn't a bad thing.

Also FWIW he was told by a team scout to go in shirtless.

    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
    • Supposedly he plans on staying in college for all 4 years.
