Could the Safety Answer already be on the roster?

No this isn’t about Gaulden. But another unheralded free agent option.

QUIN BLANDINGCAROLINA PANTHERS

Quin Blanding went undrafted out of Virginia following a productive 2017 season with the Cavaliers. He found his way to Carolina in 2018 and could be in line for meaningful snaps this season. Blanding currently sits behind Eric Reidand Rashaan Gaulden on the depth chart, but his play could be too hard to overlook this offseason.

Although he didn’t log any NFL snaps last season, he came out of Virginia after producing an 84.3 overall grade — eighth among draft-eligible safeties. He missed only 11 tackles on 144 tackle attempts and allowed only 21 receptions with eight combined interceptions and pass breakups. @PFF_Panthers: Quin Blanding didn’t log a snap as a UDFA for the #Panthers last season, but that doesn’t mean he should be overlooked. In his final season at Virginia, Blanding  allowed just one TD while snagging four INTS in coverage.

I don’t know much about the kid but seeing as he didn’t log a single snap last season but we retained him must mean there is something there. What say you!

I’m pretty sure he was a UDFA for the Falcons and just didn’t make it past roster cuts. Did we not pick him up recently?

I think Quinn. Is more of a depth SS.  As for FS my dark horse pick is Kai Nacua out of BYU.  He has the best athleticism of all the JAGS in the secondary.  And has been a ball hawk anywhere he goes.  No, I doubt he starts but a possible depth piece.

So you think he'll bump Colin Jones out of a roster spot?  I doubt we carry more than four safeties.  Jones has had that reserve FS spot on lock down for a while; not so much because of his safety skills, but because he's our ST captain.

    • Number 9  Carolina Panthers  Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, produced career highs in completion percentage (63.6%), passing yards per game (188.2) and passing touchdowns (23) in 2025. However, those numbers aren't exactly stellar by NFL quarterbacking standards. Even though the Panthers backdoored their way into the postseason in 2025 as NFC South champions with an 8-9 record, Young's performance was up-and-down. He threw for the third-fewest passing yards by a quarterback to make the playoffs in the last 20 seasons, per CBS Sports Research.  FEWEST PASSING YARDS BY QB TO REACH PLAYOFFS, LAST 20 SEASONS (MIN. 16 STARTS) PASSING YARDS PLAYOFF WINS 2012 Christian Ponder (MIN) 2,935 0 2008 Joe Flacco (BAL) 2,971 2 2025 Bryce Young (CAR) 3,011 0 2006 Steve McNair (BAL) 3,050 0 2019 Josh Allen (BUF) 3,089 0 Young did deliver some high highs, like when he threw for a franchise-record 448 yards passing in a Week 11 overtime win at the Atlanta Falcons and when he went toe-to-toe with Stafford in the playoffs in a 34-31 defeat.  Kenny Pickett couldn't win the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition a year ago, and Will Grier is a career backup.
