Panthers receiver corps ranked No. 28 in the NFL for 2019

Can't wait to be ranked 50th after cutting Smith

Im worried that there will be a negative morale in the receiver room if they cut smith. Every receiver on the team and Greg constantly talk about him in a positive light. DJ and Samuel both brought him up unintentionally in their interviews. There has to be a lot of respect for

him in that room.

Itll be much much higher a few weeks into the season.

I love the media being so low on us.  Gives our guys a chip on their shoulders

Btw

One of the other guys from Bleacher report posted this as well.

Cam the #17 QB below Goff, Ryan, Trubisky, Watson, Stafford, Garoppolo's, etc

Has Luck the #2 QB in the league

Funchess, if anything was a clutch/possession threat that happened to do his best work on the sides, hardly an ‘outside’ threat. And that was in 2017 when he peaked and went to poo in 2018.

Smith has never been a threat. Anywhere.

Defenses never accounted for either of those two despite what Rivera wanted to believe, putting them on the field before Moore and CS.

Moore has to step up this year and it’s a shame he wasn’t able to play a full season last year and get more experience due to Funchess somehow giving us the best chance to win according to the coaches. Still I really think Moore will demand attention from the opposing defense. He’s the surest thing I think we have to a threat at the position.

Samuel also needed to be accounted for and was eased back in from injury. It’s also his time to step up and give us an outside threat. I’d really like him to be used to stretch the field. At this point though he is a question mark.

Wright is decent and can make plays. But he seems like the type that needs play design to favor him rather than just flat out beating his man. A serviceable WR.

CMC is of course a receiving threat and an all around type threat. He’s really the glue holding any success this offense has together. Has to be accounted for no question.

As I’ve said I really think Olsen is done and has been. He’ll be good for a couple clutch catches and red zone targets if he’s healthy and no doubt he will keep the defense honest. But he’s past his prime and someone will have to help stretch the field.

All in all, I’d have to agree with the ranking, not the article. As a fan with high homer hopes yea we can say they don’t know poo about our WR but other than CMC, we really don’t know if this WR group can carry the load. Bias aside, you get the feeling they can. Cam doesn’t need superstars. In fact I’d argue a main target distracts him as he stares them down. What he needs is consistency and targets who can get open and with that in mind, it appears we have that ability now more than ever.

They're men. They can handle it.

I mean, our WR corps isn't great and is, at best, 'promising.' Easily the worst in the division. DJ Moore might not even be the best soph wideout in the division and Ridley is obviously not the best wideout on Atlanta...

Olsen and CMC would spice things up quite a bit but if we're talking purely wideouts, not sure how you can argue with this. Virtually every team in the NFC except for bottom feeders like Zona, the Slurs, and SF has a former 1k receiver if not two.

^This. As far as the team being leery about sending locker room leaders packing, that didn't seem to deter them from giving Thomas Davis his walking papers.

While we do have the "worst"  WR corps in the division, that really has to be put in perspective.  When the other three divisional rivals are all ranked int he top 5 (that much I do agree with) then you comparing to the best groups in the League.  While 28th is too low, I think the Panthers got dinged for not being AS loaded as the other teams in the division at WR.

If they're professionals like we the think they are, it shouldn't even matter.

Not sure how we could expect anything else?  Worst? No.  Top half? Nah.  So anywhere between 16-32 would be fair

I think people are more annoyed at the commentary, which shows an extreme lack of knowledge of the situation.  When a person shows an extreme lack of knowledge of the situation, it throws doubt into their over all conclusion (ranked 28th).

DJ Moore > Ridley.  Ridley had a fluke rookie year where he was specifically targeted in the endzone, but didn't actually do much otherwise.

Moore was 55 Rec 788 Yards 14.3 avg.

Ridley was 64 Rec, 821 yards, 12.8 avg.

Sure, Ridley had 10 td vs Moore's 2.  Riddley had 3 in a single game early on, and 5 by game 4 before not having another big game the rest of the year.  Moore, on the other hand, didn't even start getting more than 2 targets a game until week 5.

I expect Ridley's TDs to drop majorly, while Moore continues to pass him in yardage, and a higher average.

Ridley will be able to do what he does while playing with a loaded WR group, and having someone else draw the double teams.

Moore will keep pace while being the main guy.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
