Voth's interesting comment about Cam

Voth said something I had noticed but never made this connection:

Paraphrasing:  "Cam's arm issues did not start halfway through the season last year--they started 2 years ago.  He lost his touch on the long ball."  If your shoulder was dinged or injured, that is where it would be the most noticeable.

Having had 2 shoulder surgeries from football injuries myself, I can tell you that most of my teammates and I tried to play  through them.  You think they are going to heal, then they feel OK, then something irritates them again, making them worse, and then they slowly erode.  For me, it was an injury and then a slow decline that you don't really notice until you have to deal with it.

Cam said basically the same thing--(Paraphrasing) "It has been so long since I was 100%, I don't remember what 100% is like."

Maybe my experiences made this interesting and it is not interesting to most.  Maybe i just realized what you all knew--but to me, this was interesting.

Cam should have had his arm cleaned up two years ago yes, but he didn't. He chose a holistic approach with a PT. That was a bad decision but it's in the past now. With that said changing his motion and actually being protected in the pocket will be very beneficial.

He tried the PT then got the surgery after it didn't work.

Then the Scar tissue formed and prevented his arm from being 100% again. They just scoped out the scar tissue.

His first surgery was March 2 years ago. He wasn't going to get the main surgery and the cleanup surgery within months of each other before the cleanup was known to be needed.

Cam also shouldn't have been played down the stretch in '16 when he was obviously injured and we were out of contention and then we rode him into the ground again last year. From an outside perspective (which admittedly is imperfect at absolute best) it just seems like this entire shoulder injury situation has been poorly managed. At least Cam seems to understand that from his perspective now. His shoulder will likely never truly be 100% again, but hopefully it remains a manageable situation with smarter management of the situation.

That's exactly how it happens. Usually a clean up comes 3 months after the surgery. It's happens to minorities more than any other. I don't blame him for the approach but he should have done it last year at least because you know the scar tissue hasn't released.

The mistake was trying to play through it before it was fully healed. Even surgery can not fix a problem unless the mind agrees. Check out the placebo effect in surgery study. https://www.acsh.org/news/2017/07/27/surgerys-placebo-effect-11609

I would not say that. It was more the handling and a symptom that caused what we saw. If there is no more damage than the first injury caused he should be good for years. But you need to protect him like Drew Brees or Tom Brady. Anything injured is never going to hold up under poor conditions.

Playing through it while getting clobbered with a poor line didn't help either. Did you see Larsen get blown up last night. Well that was Cam's protection the last two years with the Kalil brothers collecting checks.

Going thru something similar. Tore my right rotator and bicep tendon, had surgery then screwed everything up again. Going back under the knife next month

We didn’t really ride him into the ground last year...

We kind of did. I get that we had an outside shot at the playoffs but Cam was done before the last saints game. When the damn owner has to tell Marty Hurney “he’s done. Everyone can see it. The fans. Teammates. Everyone” then that to me signals incompetence in management. Like he actually had to say that out loud instead of the people in charge knowing. That interaction was really eye opening for me.

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Broncos part ways with a CB on the roster bubble Broncos get: 2026 seventh-round pick Panthers get: CB Damarri Mathis The Broncos have a rare problem among NFL teams: too many cornerbacks. ESPN's Jeff Legwold projects they could move on from Mathis, who was very good as a rookie in 2022 before losing his starting job after the defense's slow start in 2023. He played just 27 defensive snaps after Week 6 that season and 80 more across 10 games in 2024. With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around. Mathis' best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn't been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina's primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash, similar to what the Commanders did when they sent running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers.
    • They can get fuged for a 6th and 7th. Doesn't make sense for us for anything less than a 4th and them paying a majority of his salary.
