Some Final Pre-Season Observations

*Haven't ever been a fan of Heinicke or the Grier pick...  but, after watching all of the preseason games, and I never thought I would find myself saying this, but I think Heinicke might possibly still be the best option on the roster as the backup QB.  I get it.  He only played against scrubs, but Allen looked nothing like he did last season against the Saints, where he actually had me believing he may be a quality backup.  Allen was all over the place this preseason, and I know we didn't gameplan, but he just looked bad.  Regardless,  I think the staff made it clear that Allen is the guy last night.  Ideally, we need to find a vet, put Grier on IR and hope he develops...  but, even more ideal than that, let's just hope Cam stays healthy.  PERIOD.

*Hemingway was noticeable all preseason.  He should be the 3rd TE over Manhertz.  No doubt in my mind.

*Some defensive "bubble" guys that flashed all preseason - Edge - Haynes, Obada, Miller; LB A.Williams, Andre Smith; CB J. Elliott; S Gaulden, Kunaczyk (sp?...  #43).  Not sure how the numbers will shake out, but I feel like we cant release any of those edge guys.  Smith might've played himself into that Mayo role behind Luke and Shaq.  I was surprised at how unimpressive Carter was this year compared to last.  Smith may have surpassed him.  I expect Elliott to be our nickel back.  Gaulden appears to have proven me wrong.  The guy has great instincts and he, Williams, and #43 were always around the ball.  I expect Gaulden makes the final 53, with Williams and #43 on the PS.

*My HB Depth Chart - CMC, Scarlett (love this guy, he is just positive yards every touch), Holyfield.  Bonnafon has been impressive as well, but he just seems to slight to me and not as powerful of a runner as our two rookies.

*At WR, I feel really bad for Ross.  He was possibly the best player in the AAF.  He made plays when he got the snaps here, but that's the problem...  we really didn't give him the snaps.  He had guys signed after him and wearing single-digit numbers (looking at you Aldrick Robinson) playing in front if him last night.  I just feel he didn't get a fair shot, but was impressive in limited action.  Speaking of, where tf were we hiding Deandrew White?  Dude was balling last night, and was extremely impressive.  But, ultimately, I don't think it mattered one way or the other for those guys because I'm pretty sure Godwin is the final WR to make the roster, and I'm ok with that.

I agree with Jourdan Rodrigue that both Bonafon and Kunaszyck might have played their way onto the roster or as a floor will be on PS if they aren't snatched away.

I think it's time to move on from CAP, but well see if Rivera feels different.

Holyfield seems like a practice squad guy to me, hopefully no one steals him away.

Wonder if Hemingway is PS eligible still

I've never seen us have such good WR depth. A quality player or two will have to see the axe.

Last thing: Grier has potential but he has a long way to go to being a consistent player much less living up to his potential. He is a year away from being a year away IMO. But if he works at it he might end up being a decent -great backup that is a trade chip down the road

grier has the arm but no idea at all how to play nfl football

that's the risk you take with all these kids coming out from horseshit programs where they only read a third of the field or whatever

but lmao if you think hurney doesn't look at grier and see his next jake delhomme.

holy poo.....you're right

hurney wants that good old country boy with a big arm who plays the game the old fashioned way

yeah he might not have the best completion percentage but he commands the huddle and when the games on the line he comes in and makes the big throw!

he's like a heroin addict chasing the dragon. finding delhomme gave him the biggest rush of his life, made him look like a genius, and he's been after it again ever since.

I think Obada for sure makes the team - especially because we play in London and he is a "feel good story" for us as an organization.. sometimes a story is bigger than the sport..

obviously if he sucked - it wudnt be a discussion.. but since he is fringe and flashed a lot last night - he sealed the deal.. he makes the squad.. i hope LB Smith makes it too.. he was everywhere

Grier doesnt look good to me at all.. I honestly hope we draft another guy next year.

Honestly would have made more sense to wait on a QB until next year anyway. Allen will get any of the backup QB minutes this year, Grier is already 24, and we could have used 100 on someone who would actually contribute this year. At this point though, we've got to stick it out with Grier though, no sense in giving up on him already.

This is what scares me.

I mean sure but you gotta think Norv and Scott had a major say in him being drafted here.

From the initial call between Norv and Grier, it sounded like Scott sold Norv on him and then Hurney went and got the guy his coaches wanted. I put it mostly in Scott.
